5 dock paint job ATTN: Mick Mulhall

Was pretty bummed to rock up to 5 dock today and see this in progress. I mean i'm all for skatepark reservation/conservation but from what the painters explained the whole thing sounded suss:
-3 coats of paint
-even the dude painting said it was going to be really slippery
-thery're doing every square inch (even platforms and flatbottoms)
-it sounded like there was no skater involvement and just a bunch of council representatives standing around before we rocked up

definitley looking to stand corrected. and of course it'll eventaully get it's grip back, otherwise the old coke on the tranny trick might need to be employed, but I'm still hoping they're not even temporarily fucking up one of sydney's only good tranny parks.

It was getting pretty rough.. It'll be alright. be a good thing in the end.. especially those outside areas.. those things are rough as guts.. did they give the old bowl a coat too?

Cameron M
Cameron M 19:52 31/Oct/12

yeah, it's true i'm getting ahead of myself and need to be patient. The old sections will definitely be improved.

I actually forgot to check but I assume so as the guy in charge assured me they were painting 'everything' every single surface throughout the whole park.

Gee.. It has been almost 2 years since I last logged in here. Sanity retained! haha..

I'm actually glad that the park is finally getting a paint job, as it has been ripping pads off and tearing the skin of us old stinky pad wearing farts quite regularly.

The council did want to paint the park after it was built, but I asked them to leave it for at least 5 years, which is now the age of the park (thereabouts).

Ok.. I'll get on with it.

I only found out about the park being painted yesterday, so rang the council to alleviate my own and some other locals worry's. As of today's visit to the park and two calls to council, the park will be painted pretty much the same colour as the shark bowl at Bondi, which is much better than the blue that the painters thought it was going to be when I spoke to them at noon today.

I also met an engineer who was inspecting cracks and chips in the crete. As far as I could gather from our conversation, I think those repairs will be done before the final coat is rolled out.

Depending on weather, I think the plan is to have everything done by Friday.

Hope that answers the mystery guys.. And thanks for your opinion of Five Dock as one of the best transition parks in Sydney. I know that all the locals appreciate that opinion.

Mick..

Oh yeah..

I'm hoping that the paint will not only be a similar neutral colour to the Bondi shark bowl, but also a similar texture, as I've heard that the Bondi locals mostly like the paint in that bowl.

As long as those that wear pads can knee slide safely, and tail slides and revert tricks are easier to control we'll all be happy.

By all means, please let us know what you all think in some sort of thread. If there are any issues, I'm sure the locals will do their best to let council know.

hahahaha the miss-comunication about the blue is directly my fault, while chatting with the painter he mentioned that he was instructed to paint it the same colour as bondi bowl (not skatepark) so I immediately assumed he meant the blue.

As just one voice I'm completely happy to put my trust into whatever you reckon'll be best, as some one who skates there so much, you most likely know whats best for the place. Sick that'll be done by the weekend, will check it out early next week.

Definitely is going to take some getting used to judging the tranny until there's a sufficient amount of wheel marks/bad graffiti to define it. But all for the greater good i suppose.

Keep up the good work/ being involved mick, at least once a week we assemble a small crew to head out from the northern beaches in order to appreciate 'le barron dock'

I freaked out when he mentioned Bondi Blue as well Cam. Blue is fine for a pool style bowl, but not for something as spread out as the Dock. It wouldn't get marked by pads and riding as much, and therefore stay bright and blinding.

As far as my attitude goes towards the park being painted.. I look at the history of Marseille bowl. I rode that park 3 days after it was built, and am glad that with all the regular paint jobs over the years, Marseille is now 21 years old and still skating well (so I've heard).

May see you up the park some time Cam. I'm up to 3 months off after tearing my MCL in seppotown. Can't wait to skate my local again.

Too bad Frankston has been left so long without paint, the big bowl is rough as shit now...hopefully they get a cost or two on it soon before it turns into being as rough as Corio middle bowl (ironically called the Paint Tray)
I know all our regular coats of paint prolonged the life of Fitzroy bowls surface after the council used to repeatedly sandblast the graffiti off every second week

Yeah Nick, Franga flat was rough and tore pads off when I was there about 4 years ago. I suggested that it needed painting back then. I'll have to talk to Wedge about it, as he's a man of action.

With weather and carbon dioxide breakdown of crete, no park surface is going to last longer than 5 to 8 years.

How is Corio now? Is it still ok to skate?

From what I can gather whilst standing behind the fence as a council meeting proceeded, there will be some repair to concrete before the paint job is finished.

The final coat of paint is grey. It's a little shiny and flat, but given time it will wear and show the curves of the park again.

I'm not sure exactly when all this will be finished, but I did overhear a time frame of late next week.

Big thanks to Canada Bay Council for the work they're putting into the park, which will guarantee the longevity of the park. I'm sure the locals will enjoy the improvement once they can find their lines again. hehe..

A bunch of concrete repairs were done last week, and as of my last visit I'd say that 95% of the park is now white. Hopefully the final coat will be finished by the end of this week.

I'd say not to bother driving out there until the fences are down. I'll post again when there's an all clear to skate.
