Introducing Casey Foley, AKA Ducky

Interview by Moey (pix Mein + Morey)

Where are you from in NZ?

I'm from a town called Oamaru, in the South Island, within minimal spots and too many boy racers. It has a small crew of skaters who all smash it. Parties at the skate park as a youngin helped make the place bearable.

What made you move from the homeland to Melbourne?

I had made the decision to move here as soon as I left school, saved up by working fucked up hours in a meat abattoir, cleaning up frozen sheep meat from the ground. I pretty much had no set desire in Melbourne but to skate and have fun. I had talked about it with Sam Wood and Geoff Campbell heaps. They would just say how dope it is, and my decision was set from there. In March I will have been here for 4 years!

SW FS 180 - Morey

Awesome. What was it like working in an abattoir? Turn you into a vego at all?

Nah man. It was pretty bad, especially because I was only 17. Freshly out of school to the heaviest work environment ever. There were some awesome people that worked there, so it kind of made it bearable. I had my mind set on getting the fuck out of there asap so that was the ultimate motivation to keep working hard and save.

So Geoff and Woodsta hyped Melbourne up pretty hard? Did it live to your expectations?

Fuck yeah. I love Melbourne. The skate scene here is just ridiculous. Rock up to lincoln on a Saturday at lunch time and you'll see why I love it so much. Also everyone is actually motivated to skate, weather it's going to film something with Geoff, or skate IMAX flat ground for hours, there's always the fattest crew.

Word. Who nick named you Ducky?

Some kid when I was like 13 or some shit. He claimed that my mum looked like a duck... So itworked out that I would be "Duck Man".

Do you have many mates in Aus that you grew up skating with in NZ?

Yeah hard. Big Cologne Boy (Colin Evans). He was mad inspiration as a kid. Always rocking the freshest yellow globe tees. His steez changed up a bit over the years and he ended up looking just like Ali Boulala. Also I met Geoff Campbell and Arthur Kay when I was around 15. Those two were the ultimate duet. Rocking baggy blue jeans and basketball singlets, skating everything switch with speed.

Haha thats hilarious. Who were your skateboarding influences? Dress much differently to today?

Hahaha. Hmm. Well Geoff and Arthur were my biggest influences, although I've never worn a basketball singlet.James Wright was a huge influence too. I actually remember wearing a fuckn scarf because Id seen him doing it. Henry Sanchez got me on to orange tees when I was proper grommie.

Whats your current living situation? What happens on your day to day?

I live in Carlton. Can't have it any other way. Tram to Lincoln Square is right by my house. My usual day goes like... Get up, work until 4:30, call the boys and meet up for a skate. Usually Lincoln square or IMAX is the go. Drink a few beers, get a feed, and then back home.

Gotta live close to the city? Do you skate everywhere?

For sure bro. Yeah I skate or bikemost places. Trams are a huge help.No drivers license, hahah. I hate skating 'the burbs' so a car isn't needed.

Wallie - Mein

Skate + beer everyday? I heard Geoff (Campbell) has never filmed a trick sober?

Haha well Geoff hasdefiantly filmed tricks sober. Good add on tho.I think it's when he's proper hucking, is when the beer gives him the confidence. I just get all bloated up and can't Ollie if I have too much. I just sip away haha. Nah not beers everyday, I skate most days after work, and if it's 30 degrees a beer is pretty damn refreshing.

Anyone hooking you up with proddy at the moment?

Yep. I'm a lucky man. Chris Middlebrook hooks me up Nikes, I ride for Hemley Skateshop, and just got on '4' skateboards. Very lucky.

Youve been traveling a fair bit in 2012. Where did you go?

Well our first trip was to Japan. Originally it was a crew of 6. Eventually in turned into something like 16. It was fucked up. Picture 16 stinking Aussie/New Zealandstinkers trying to get our uneducated asses around Japan. Shit was amazing. Amazing spots, amazing culture. My second overseas trip was to New York City, which hadbeen on my mind for fuckn years.

What were your favourite parts of Japan?

Osaka is the dopest. Its just so East. Allthe spots just look so cool.

How did it compare to NYC?

Mad different. Japan's food is just the greatest, all healthy and tasty, New York just has draining fatty crap. The cities are both quite similar tho. Ghetto streets, fucked up characters everywhere, cheap booze. The architecture of both places is just so fuckn sick.

SW Pop shuv - Morey

What did you do in New York and how long were you away for? Metal curbs for days?

3 weeks I'm pretty sure. We pretty much just skated everyday. If it were too hot we would chill and do touristy stuff. But yeah a shit load of skating. I'm fuckn happy we committed tho. A lot of people say they didn't get much skating done there because of the partying and all that. The city is just so fuckn sick. Hitting cellar doors, skitching cars, getting east bro!!!

What do you have on for 2013? Daily Summer beers at Lincoln and iMax with da boyz?

Hahaha. Fuck yeah. Exactly right. I wanna save up more cash again and do a few more overseas missions. Try to hit San Francisco and skate all the OG spots, NYC is a definite round 2, and hopefully somewhere else in the world.

Sounds real good. When are we gonna see a full Casey D. Foley part? Working on some stuff with Geoff (Campbell)?

Hmm. Yeah, Geoffs making another vid. I won't have a 'full part' that shits intense. I'll probably have something similar to my footage in 'Secky Presh'. I like it like that, it's so much more interesting. Its more a 'da boiis' part ya know? Iget sostoked on Seckybecause its all of my good homies fuckn killing it, all onone track.
