perfect vertical fish use, mapstone would be proud, it sucks you still got motion blur, need to shoot later in the day or more flashes

haha yeh I was wondering who would pick up on the blur it's pretty bad if you look up close

flashes were on full and I shot at 1/250... I tried 1/500 but background and sky was underexposed. I think I asked this before is there a way around this?

just thinking about it...

if I upped the iso to 400 (shouldn't look THAT bad) shot at 1/500 and halved the flash power (to shorten flash duration?), would the exposure look the same but less motion blur? or are things more complicated than that?

if you do the tiniest pan with the skater you can get rid of motion blur
but not too much that you screw up the composition
i used to do that and it works
ps what are you shooting with fetus?
Andrew.

ok im gonna be a harsh ****... but all constructive, cause i like this photo, and i only normally bother critiquing photos i like...

its not perfect use of verticle fisheye... should be in the very top of the frame which just means angle your camera down a bit or get lower, this will make the rail bigger and him look higher.

the unsharpness can be prevented by more flashes, or putting your flashes closer to the skateboarder, cause then it will overpower the ambient more and freeze his movement more. dont do a slight pan with the skateboarder as your background could become slightly out of focus, and you dont really want that in a photo like this.

the slight softness could also be due to whatever powere your shooting your flashes, if they are sunpak 555's or somehting you cant shoot action above 1/4 power cause the flash duration is too slow. this it ok, just move your flashes closer, youd be suprised how much coverage you can get from have your flashes tucked almost right in next to you, and just aim them at the right points, so that your skateboarder and the stairs get hit. i'm all about shooting with minimal flashes... i only shoot with 3 flashes and they are weak as piss.

either wa i like the photo, its tight... but just a couple of things to think about and i thought i should guide you away from some misguiding advise that you just got told..

RE: MISC SKATE PHOTOS Hey Andrew, thanks heaps, crit like that is exactly what I need... and I'm sure other people learn from it too.

I think you are right where I went wrong... flash power too high therefore flash duration was too long

What's the highest you would set flash power on a SB-600 or SB-24?

Here's a diagram of how it was set up, although I can't remember the aperture..I'll have to check the exif when I get home.

Thanks for the comments

yeah its like half power for those nikon flashes is doable, depending on whether they are going across your plane or towards... makes a difference...

you could bring your flashes in though for sure.

"flash power too high therefore flash duration was too long"
