The Harrison Street DIY is a Community built skate spot project in the Columbus Park neighbourhood of Kansas City. The lot in the corner of their neighbourhood that had fostered unwanted behaviour for years has been transformed to help fill a desperate need in the skateboard community for more spaces that allow skateboarding and also make the area a more usable and less dangerous place for everyone in the neighbourhood. It wasn't all smooth sailing though - the City temporarily blocked off the entire section of road where the project is however after holding Community discussions and with persistence and support from the Charlotte Street Foundation and Tony Hawk Foundation it has become Kansas City's first city-approved DIY skate spot and definitely looks a thousand times better now than what it was originally. Check the Harrison Street DIY website for a detailed look at the history of the project and the process of building the park and also peep their Instagram page for some clips. Give it a watch if you haven't already. In 1976 a rag-tag mob of surfers and high school students poured the worlds first downhill skateboarding track. Unknown to the broader community and even the local townsfolk, the Albany Snake Run is infamous amongst the skateboarding community and attracts many enthusiast pilgrims from across the globe. Today, it remains a relic of the past, modestly waiting to test any rider who dares to test its weathered concrete surface. The Snake-Run documents the passion of the local grass roots surf and skate culture. A movement that lead to the construction of the oldest existing skate track in the world and the extent of its influence can be felt from South America to the United States and Europe. The Snake Run has been heritage listed by the state! Full documentary is up on the Brisbane Skateboarding Association Facebook page. http://www.facebook.com/BrisbaneSkateboardingAssociation @morgan_campbell @slamskateboarding @brisbanecitycouncil #brisbaneskateboarding

The Brisbane Skateboarding Association continues to be committed to further increasing the provision of skate and youth facilities in Brisbane City in the near future and have been attending regular meetings with @brisbanecitycouncil and also meetings with various Councillors regarding potential upgrades in their wards. A recent meeting was held with Cr Ryan Murphy @murphy_rm for Doboy Ward regarding the upgrade for the existing skate facility in Murarrie Recreation Reserve adjacent to Wynnum Road. The BSA can advise that Cr Murphy has allocated $380,000 to upgrade of the existing skate facility from Divisional Funding, which is likely to include an extension of the current footprint, whilst retaining section of the existing facility. Whilst it is early stages in the project, it is the Councillor's intention that the upgrade will take place over the coming term of local government (i.e. next four years). In the shorter term, consultation and design activities will be undertaken to inform the upgrade of the existing facility, which is likely to be funded either in the next financial year (i.e. FY 16 - 17) or thereafter. The bulk of the work is expected to take place in the 2017 - 18 financial year. The BSA advised Cr Ryan Murphy that onsite community consultation supported by digital and online engagement would be the best way to gather feedback from skaters and young people. Please stay tuned to our social feeds for more information about how you can get involved - providing feedback on the upgrade. Council and Councillors are aware that the skate community is generally pretty happy with the quality and outcomes delivered at the Bracken Ridge Skate Park, which will be used as a benchmark for skate facility design across Brisbane City, However, it is unlikely that the size of the upgrade of the Murrarie Skate Facility is unlikely to be the same size, due to the differences in the current budget. As far as lighting goes, it is unlikely that it will be included in the upgrade at this stage, but there is potentially supporting infrastructure (i.e. electrical conduit) can be included in construction works. #brisbaneskateboarding

We've just posted a link on the Brisbane Skateboarding Association Facebook page to an excerpt which was written by Scott Shearer and Indigo Willing and is taken from a book called 'Skateboarding - Subcultures, Sites and Shifts' published in 2015. The book explores the cultural, social, spatial, and political dynamics of skateboarding, drawing on contributions from leading international experts across a range of disciplines, such as sociology and philosophy of sport, architecture, anthropology, ecology, cultural studies, sociology, geography, and other fields. Part I critiques the ethos of skateboarding, its cultures and scenes, global trajectory, and the meanings it holds. Part II critically examines skateboarding in terms of space and sites. Part III explores shifts that have occurred in skateboarding's history around mainstreaming, commercialization, professionalization, neoliberalization and creative cities. @brisbanecitycouncil @standingupforbrisbane @goodwillinghunting #brisbaneskateboarding

As part of this new skating spot there would be new seating areas, a shelter, a water fountain and bins, a new path which provides the entry point to the skate spot and provides additional access to the existing dog off leash area. A new quarter basketball court is also integrated into the layout. Redland City Council is taking feedback for the design and wants to know your thoughts on it.
