We just posted an interesting article on the Brisbane Skateboarding Association Facebook page.
@brisbanecitycouncil take note, it's time for change, no more of that dinosaur mentality! It's time to get on board with this stuff. 'Skating bans and defensive architecture are increasingly giving way to a realisation of the positive role skateboarding can play in education, entrepreneurship and community cohesion.
It's not just skaters who are cultivating a new kind of skate city. A skate infrastructure building boom is under way, with just about every UK council - having realised that skateboarding is healthy and accessible - now boasting at least one new skatepark in the heart of the local community.' We just posted a link on the brisbane Skateboarding Association Facebook page to a positive article on Skateboarding that appeared on the @abcnews_au website. @brisbanecitycouncil give it a read, you might learn a thing or two.
A couple of noteworthy quotes from the article, "Skateboarding creates a positive community, it teaches them to teach other tricks and promotes a good self-image" & "The group aims to use the sport to help the children, as a tool to engage the kids, to develop self-esteem, confidence and an alternative lifestyle to the troubles on the street.
An update on some of the Skatepark upgrades around Brisbane:
The upgrades for Paddington Skatepark, Inala Skatepark and the development of the Ashgrove Skatepark have funding matters currently being held up in State Government.
Bracken Ridge is planned to be designed this year with construction to commence approx. April 2016 after the aquatic centre is built.
The Brisbane Skateboarding Association will be meeting with Council tomorrow and we will have more information available then.
@brisbanecitycouncil - This is where implementing a Skate Facility Strategy would definitely be beneficial and is why almost all other Councils in the area have implemented one for their skate facilities. #brisbaneskateboarding
We just posted a recent article that appeared in Quest Community Newspapers relating to the need for a new park to replace the run-down Lota facility that's "full of cracks". Visit the Brisbane Skateboarding Association Facebook page for the full article & sign the Skate Facility Strategy while you're at it. @brisbanecitycouncil @questnewspapers #brisbaneskateboarding
We have an update from Brisbane City Council regarding some of the redevelopments and upgrades to some of Brisbane's Skateparks. "Council is committed to delivering the upgrades for Paddington Skatepark & Inala Skatepark, with tendering for the construction contracts having gone out at the moment. They are looking to choose the contractors soon afterwards.
The Council would like to start works on the construction of the upgrades at both skateparks at the start of July, (Council could be on site at Paddington Skatepark at the end of June). The redevelopment at Paddington Skatepark will be a two stage process due to site constraints and available budget.
Bracken Ridge is planned to be designed this year with construction to commence approx. April 2016 after the aquatic centre is built." The Brisbane Skateboarding Association is looking into other avenues to help with budget/funding for future maintenance and development of Brisbane Skateparks and we'll have more info on this available in the near future. @brisbanecitycouncil #brisbaneskateboarding
