If you like watch skateboarding for free and bikinis this just might be for you. One of the biggest drawcards to the Australian Open is undoubtedly the ominous and unmistakable GoPro Beach Bowl.
The legendary bowl measures more than 12 feet deep, boasts more than 3 feet of vert and has a total footprint of in excess of 500 square feet. The bowl is imported from the USA and takes nearly a week to construct.
It features grandstand seating, pumping beats and of course incredible action from some of skateboarding’s biggest names.
Best thing of all, entry for spectators is absolutely free!
I love coming to the Australian Open of Surfing in Manly, it is one of my favourite events. What isn’t to love about it? A bowl on one of Sydney’s best beaches!
Alex Sorgente
Dual World Record holder and reigning 2015 AIS World Bowl Champion Alex Sorgente has competed at all three previous GoPro Beach Bowl events and his name is among an impressive list heading Down Under for a repeat visit in 2016.
“I love coming to the Australian Open of Surfing in Manly, it is one of my favourite events. What isn’t to love about it? A bowl on one of Sydney’s best beaches!” says Sorgente.
Riders will compete in a jam format in Pro and Masters divisions, with anywhere from four to eight riders taking turns during a specified amount of time. Judges score on technical tricks, height, speed and combinations of all three factors.
As usual, there will be some extra spice thrown in; there are two additional winner-take-all prizes available - Highest Air and Best Trick!
If you can’t get down to the GoPro Beach Bowl in person, you can watch all the action live online and the finals on FoxSports.
