After seeing those few shots you get a better idea of the different obstacles, and how much different stuff is there. Can't wait to hit it!

I went for a skate last night and they have put sand bags around the lakes edge to stop any runaway boards.

sandbags will be in the lake by the end of the weekend, good thinking TAMS

TAMS didn't put the sandbags there, it was skaters. They have been there for a few days and are helping in the interim although I reckon if you hit them with speed probably would go over 'em.

An initiative is in the works, we're just finalising it. I'll keep you posted.

First it was shoppers, then late-night revellers, now Canberra's skaters and BMXers are set to come under closed-circuit TV surveillance.
ACT Attorney-General Simon Corbell has plans to trial a scheme that will keep Canberra's young skaters under the watchful eyes of the law as they use the city's skate parks.

The $458,000 trial is designed to keep young people safe at the parks, which have allegedly become targets for thugs and thieves.

The ACT CCTV project's roll-out to nightspots at Kingston and Manuka and the construction of a monitoring suite at Belconnen's Winchester Police centre are now complete.

A spokesman for Mr Corbell said the camera network was ready to be extended to skate parks.

''A trial of CCTV at a Canberra skate park is planned to be undertaken as part of the ACT CCTV Project,'' the spokesman said.

''The CCTV system at a skate park will be designed to increase the confidence the public has in these facilities as a safe place for people, including children, to undertake their chosen form of recreation.

''It is expected that the CCTV system will be complete by mid-2012.''

The spokesman said the money for the trial had been rolled over from last year's allocation and was not new funding.

At the Yard Skate Park in Civic yesterday, 15-year-old BMXer Zach Townsley, of Gordon, and his mate Shane Summerfield, of Richardson, were unfazed by the notion of being observed by police as they went through their tricks.

''We're under observation already when we're going through shopping centres and when we're going through the city centre, so it doesn't really bother me,'' Zach said.

''We haven't had anything happen to us but we've heard some stories about people taking bikes and stuff and taking stuff out of bags.

''So there'd probably be less crime because people would know about it and they'd think twice.''

Bullying and theft targeting children and young people at skate parks has been a growing concern. Nine young men and teenagers are currently facing court over a series of alleged muggings at skate facilities in the city's south in December 2010.

Cool, we can watch the bowl jam surveilance footage to make sure none of those teenagers in the crowd were cheating on their wizard staffs.

Blunt and grind at 'Belco Bowl'
BY FRANCES STEWART 24 Jul, 2011

SKATEBOARDERS have taken to the new Belconnen skate park, with about 200 people testing the $4.2million upgraded park last weekend ahead of its official opening next month.

While some initial ''teething problems'' including runaway skateboards falling into the lake have been identified, Canberra Skateboarding Association president Luke Brown told the Sunday Canberra Times the park was ''awesome''.

''I want to say thanks and acknowledge all the hard work that TAMS ACT Government, Manteena, Convic, Concrete Skateparks, Oxigen and others have put in to make this the awesome thing it is,'' he said.

''I am so stoked I live in Belconnen.''

The new park's design retains the popular ''Belco Bowl'' and includes a new street skate plaza with a mix of sculptures and obstacles, a mini-ramp, shelters, seating and viewing areas.

New lighting will ensure the skate park can be enjoyed in safety for more hours of the day.
