Christiano Rivero12 Aug 2010Thinking of buying a ibanez tube screamer
anyone played the ts9 and the ts808?
P
PIG..12 Aug 2010They're great overdrive pedals.
The MXR Wylde overdrive is pretty good also!
Have you considered the Ibanez Amp with built in Tube Screamer circuitry?
C
Christiano Rivero12 Aug 2010haha I only have like a grand to my name at the moment, not going to rush off and buy another amp, pedal should do me sweet
P
PIG..12 Aug 2010The pedals are great.
Make sure you check out Maxon OD808's too.
Maxon were the company that originally made Ibanez's pedals.
D
DeathMoth12 Aug 2010took the words outta my mouth Pig.
Maxon OD808. its every bit as good as the original tubescreamer. i own one. i swear by it. tough as nails. works great as a mild boost before a dirty amp
P
PIG..12 Aug 2010I own a Suhr Riot and swear by that pedal also, but its an out and out distortion pedal as opposed to an overdrive.
As I am just a bedroom shredder, I just use my marshall combo and the Riot and control everything from there. (I normally set everything at 5 on the clean channel and control volume, tone and drive through the pedal)
It's provides great distortion at low volumes as well as high volumes, but at low volumes is where I normally play it.
It's super tweakable to you can run it with low drive for classic rock tones and you can fire it up for crazy distortion.
I absolutely adore it, but appreciate it's not for everyone.
Next on my list of things to buy is a Delay, seriously considering the MXR Carbon Copy. Heard great things about it.

shutdown13 Aug 2010Anyone had a play with the PRS SE guitars?
Saw em on ebay for 799 bucks and was a bit wtf? I realise they are cheap shit korean and dont have all the sexy shit like shaped top etc but apart from that do they even resemble the real thing as far as feel / sound goes?
P
PIG..13 Aug 2010I had a bit of a lash on a PRS SE Allender.
They actually go really nice!
Probably the best new guitar you'll find in that price bracket.
Most of the bigger stores should have a few of the SE's in stock that you can go in and have a lash on.
I've heard great things about the PRS SE Korina Single Cuts. From all accounts, they're awesome.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9hmDn7hL57sThere's a quick vid with a review of the SE Custom 22 and the Sincle Cut (not the korina though)
As an FYI, you can buy genuine PRS pickups form their US site online too (so can upgrade the pups easily to US spec)
S
shutdown13 Aug 2010fuck yeh pig, cheers for the feedback.
I figured if PRS are putting their name to them they have to be half decent. Fuck spending 4g's on a real-deal PRS. The way I disrespect my guitars I really cant justify it. (I still dont even have a case for my les paul USA / just throw it in the boot among all the amps n shit naked as the day it was carved from the log).
Based on what you say, will definitely check it out. Good call on fitting the genuine pickups too, what would a pair of those cost ya 500 usd ish? Lol almost as much as the SE guitar itself.
S
shutdown13 Aug 2010oh and to Christiano Rivero, screamers are good but dont think you will be running those puppies through a clean amp, they really only shine as a 'grunt booster' to an existing good sounding tube amp imo.
Another cheap alternative is the Boss Super Overdrive. Pretty much the same pedal and only like 70 bucks. It's what i've used in front of my marshall jcm 800's since the dawn of time.

PIG..13 Aug 2010http://stores.myregisteredsite.com/user1410582/mm5/merchant.mvc?Screen=CTGY&Store_Code=PAS&Category_Code=PUHope that link works.
Its US only (but you just need to know someone in the US to ship to and then get them to forward them to you)
They range from 128 up to 148 per pickup.
Pretty reasonable really considering how they sound!
S
shutdown13 Aug 2010fark.. so you could set one up for around 1300 aud..
pretty bloody good.. might have to go find one and give it a sus.
D
DeathMoth13 Aug 2010yeh i have a mate who has a single cut SE, and this guy is no slouch. dude has a ton of great guitars and really nice amps. although the SE is his worst guitar, it actually goes well. it feels good...and to tell the truth, the neck feels very much like a legit PRS. probably a good bargain.
also in that price range, although they don't look as good, Yamaha make good value guitars. might sound like bullshit, but its the downright truth

word war 2 transexual15 Aug 2010whats with everyone being metal heads?
S
some Rad old goat15 Aug 2010well its like this, guitar + music, metal is kind of inevitable influence once your over the 3 chord thrash phase (although there is something to be said for that)
If I wanted to be into house or techno then maybe I can forget the guitar and take up a turntable but its so "manufactured"
W
word war 2 transexual15 Aug 2010house and techno is probably just as bad as metal.
N
Noobslayer10115 Aug 2010im in love with this guitar
wheres all the folk heads haha folk music rules or twenty minute pink floyd solos n that, every guitar player plays metal these days. metals all good tho
S
shutdown15 Aug 2010metal is relevant because its one of the few musical styles where being competent across your instrument is required. It attracts those who want to push their skills further than the 4 chord chatness of most other musical genres.
Tho the use of the word 'metal' is a bit loose here. There are heaps of non-metal bands even in Australia with some fucking awesome guitarists who aren't playing blazing solos with wank-o-lo bars but still have the best musos in their setups. My personal fav's are Dead Letter Circus, Cog, Karnivool, Sleep Parade. Minimal solos here but some really original chord / picking / tuning and rhythm styles that shows a maturity of playing which could not have been achieved without learning most the core skills first. They are almost the level above the shredders in my opinion, learn to shred then learn not to use it.
D
DeathMoth15 Aug 2010thats an awesome peice of wisdom Shutdown. "learn to shred then learn not to use it"
i always thought shredding was a waste of time. metal solos have never done much for me, as much as i love metal. i don't really like being taken away from the brutality to listen to some cunt run through his appegios and scales. i much prefer blues and jazz/fusion soloing, full improv
