Marina Reserve plan sign-off is a “win for young people and their families for generations to come.”
“A win for young people and their families for generations to come.” That was the message from City of Port Phillip Mayor Cr Rachel Powning today (Monday 20 June) after the Minister for Environment and Climate Change approved Council’s ‘Marina Reserve Masterplan’.
Speaking shortly after hearing the decision, Mayor Cr Rachel Powning said: “This is truly fantastic news. We are thrilled to get the great skateable space that local young people wanted, but proud that the plans offer so much more. With a picnic area and BBQs, tables and seating, a new loop walking and bicycle path, along with improved toilet and environmental features, this will be an open space that all local people can enjoy.
“This will be an open space for everyone, from picnicking families to skaters of all abilities, from beginners to elite. Simply put, today’s decision is a win for young people and their families, for generations to come.”
Council approved the plans for the Marina Reserve in October last year. Features included an active recreation and skateable space, BBQ and picnic area, new walking paths and bike lanes, public toilets and viewing areas, all set within an expanse of green open space.
Following consultation with DSE (Department of Sustainability and Environment), the Council’s improved plans will provide even more for families, providing a great place for active and passive recreation.
Mayor Powning said: “Today’s approval is testament to the extensive community consultation we undertook last year, putting the views of local people at the heart of this project.
“Our foreshore is shared by the whole community, from walkers to skaters, picnickers to cyclists, older people to young children. We were determined that any plans for Marina Reserve would provide something special for all these groups, enabling them to share this local treasure together.”
The works will provide additional infrastructure and an extension to the foreshore promenade.
Next steps are to develop the detailed plan and operations plan with further input from local residents. Council will also facilitate a “Friends of Marina Reserve” for all those interested in joining in and helping the project develop.
Current plans are to develop detailed design and be ready to tender by late 2011. Construction is slated to commence early 2012 with an estimated construction period of 12 to 18 months.

RE: St Kilda is on!!!!!!!!!Current plans, to be poured in March. Maximum depth of 7ft due to issues with the water table, and nothing significantly raised so as to avoid obstructing the residents views.

I'm happy for you guys but jesus how much tranny do you want??? I guess if it manages to reduce the number of bike riders and scooters in that end bowl bit at riverside it will be good for everyone.
Bbonezy26 Sept 2011
bowls will bring scooters and cause them to go in every direction which i reckon is worse, what company is making this maybe more street?
Sshift26 Sept 2011

Thank fuck something has happened there! Nimbyism happens everywhere though, the same shit mentioned in that article are the same factors that hold back a majority of skate park projects that I have been apart of in ruralish areas of Qld.

I'm a little bummed out by what looks like a lack of street influenced objects.

All I see is bowl, spine, bump, some stairs leading into more bowls. If only it were a balance of both your typical tranny (no pun intended, stkilda and all) influenced park and a plaza style.

(either way it's good to hear that logical thinking finally came through with those ridiculous claims being made by local residents / celebrities. It's almost like they forgot St Kilda used to be absolute scum).

Whats up with this design.. its purely tranny. it looks more like a Bike park than skate... Were there any skaters involved in designing this?
Iimgne_1 Aug 2012
I love a good transition park just as much as next guy, but even I think that design has over done it, theres not even a single rail?
BBuddha.1 Aug 2012
City park and Prahran are close by. I think thats why the idea arose for it to be a tranny park anyway.

Insert "Street skaters should go skate street/ You're a lazy whinger I'm macho" call here.

City park, poo-ran, etc... Are old as shit and as much as i love both. But skating 10 + years and skating there alot and think that melbourne needs to be more creative "fresh" a mixture of both Tranny and Street is needed yeah!? i even think scooter kids will be upset of amount tranny... but seems to late to be putting a say in. Very happy that something is happening in st kilda tho. About time.

max 7ft, with that much tranny I though some of the bowls would be deep as shit! definately more street needed, atleast a flat bar or something.
