Why would you want to qualify your post by making it 'less serious'? I think you meant you were trying to extenuate the positions of those using the word in question, but whatever, semantics, I shouldn't have gotten hung up on that.

I see what you are saying though. I guess we disagree in our approach. The problem with racism in Australia is that it is accepted. One way we can hope to achieve ANY kind of real social progress is to call out racists for their bullshit and help (white) people learn that racism is one of the worst constructs in human history. It causes real problems, that affect millions of peoples lives and standards of living. Standing idly by as people engage in racist conversation and behavior only serves to reinforce such practices.

ppl need to chill on the racism arguments, gook is just a term to describe a group of people, it would have been just as offensive if you replaced the word 'gook' in all the angry threads with the word 'asian' because it still labels a particular group be it slang or formally. It's pretty much impossible to moderate racism unless its just crazy and repetitive. Racist commentary and labels are too subjective, add to that the fact that its ok to be overtly racist about certain groups if you share with that group a certain amount of pigmentation or fat on your eyelid. All of that is way too hard to work out.

Just chill on the "gook" type comments, even if you don't think you are a racist for using them. Some of our pals on here may find that shit upsetting and that alone should be good enough reason not to do so.

But it isn't that simple.
Say you are at a party and there are no Asians around and someone drops the term and nearly everyone laughs it off knowing the guy isn't being serious. Who is to say that someone there that then sees these types of happenings as acceptance of racism and as a result of hearing these racial slurs everywhere he becomes openly racist and very hateful.

A racial slur is a racial slur. Doesn't matter what your intention is in saying it, or how you explain and justify your usage of the word. It is a bit rich for a white person to say to another race to just get over it and its not a big deal.

How hard is it as a white person who has never experienced the negative effects of racism to refrain from saying a few words??? Simple thing to do and stops a lot of trouble and confusion from starting.
I mean if people had of not insulted the gang because of there skin colour but because of there weak actions as people this thread would still be on topic. I mean there are plenty of ways to insult the gang without resorting to race.
