Victoria snowfield question:

Am taking a friend to the snow this year who has never been before.

Am wanting to do an o/n trip and driving there. I will be leaving from the dandenongs and was therefore thinking of either Mt Buller or Mt Baw Baw.

I will prefer to snowboard but if she wants to ski then I'll have to do that instead. Looking for gentle terrain, something good for real beginners.

We'll rent everything except a scarf and beanie.

Mt buller has half price tuesdays for students so thinking of that since I'm a student.

any other thoughts/recommendations?

buller would be the best option. if she totally hates it she can go back to the lodge or down to the bar, theres more to do at buller other than ski/board.

buller sports rentals the way to go, pick up in mansfeild or on mountain is good, and you can get everything there (the boots are smelly and the gear is crappy tho! like all rentals) i'd suggest maybe renting stuff from in the cbd (auski, altitude...) they are cheaper, better, and you can pick up the day before you go, and drop off the day after you get back and still only pay for 2 days (instead of 4)

plus, buller has more chairs... i doubt a beginner wants to ride a t-bar first up...

yeah EMJ was hinting at you giving her a hand - something thata few forum heads have been wanting to do for her for a while now.

thanks JV.

is BAW BAW mostly T-bars? Getting off a chair first up is a bit hectic isn't it?

I'm thinking of making her learn baording straight up instead of skiing. what do you think?

do boarding straight up. suckers find it too hard to switch after skiing, although boarding is harder at the start.

from memory bawbaw has no chairs running.

it will be hectic getting off first, but thats half the fun.... shit it still gets hectic for me sometimes getting off!

seeing as it's my 21st next month i'm thinking of actually get around to buying a setup.
probably won't have a heap of opportunities to go to the snow due to uni etc so don't want to spend a shitload but on the other hand i want gear that i know will last, be comfortable etc.

in terms of boots have heard good things about 32 and Burton (have biggish feet, around size 11).
what about bindings and board though? would want something i can take around the whole mountain but can still use in the park. Any pointers?

thanks guys

those motos up there that bibby just got are size 13's hahahah and there the best fit and light considering there 2 maccas cups high.

the board depends on what you ride. and bindings to suit that.

park boards are basically fine for all-round riding in aus cos not like we get pow, so u dont need a long stiff board. u might want to check the base width of the board though if you have size 11 feet, but you should be right with a 156 or so. just go into the shops and suss prices and sales and stuff.

my next pair of bindings will be union or technine, maybe check those out...
