RE: MISC SKATE PHOTOS Yeah, the sky was having a weird time when I was shooting that last one. Even before post. it was just blank white. And the border has gotten a lot of mixed reviews. Im just a fan because of how I print in the darkroom, whish is because of a Templeton book I have, where he did the same thing, which I read when I was starting out. Thanks Hermans.

A newer one which kinda sucks to me. Battery died after every shot I took and my shadow annoys the shit outta me.

Perhaps lose the flash, you can get a lot out of the sun sometimes and you'll lose the glare and whatnot. Little less of that block also might look better. Just keep at it though, you'll find out what works better / combating the sky issue etc.

good shit.. the only thing i'll mention is if your shadow is obvious in the frame, find another angle

Thanks dudes. I actually can't remember why I had the flash on at that point.
I kinda tried to sacrifice having my shadow in the frame to be Ryan Allan for 5 minutes, since he does shots like that so well.

And to the dude above right here, the light seems a little weak and the frame a little unbalanced; maybe too much space on the left and not quite enough on the right. And as hard as it is to avoid, that pole seems a little to intruding on the trick.
Timing is perfect though, nice.

jjjamesss, it sounds like you should look into using the clipping warnings in lightroom/camera raw/photoshop/on the back of your camera. learning about histograms can be pretty useful to determine whether you are loosing information in the shadows/highlights.

cameron that last shot would have been so sick, had you of lit it a bit differently.
always try and avoid having your flashes to close to you, the closer it is, the flatter your subject will look. for that shot i would have put the light another 3 meters in front of you, hitting him side on if you know what i mean.
an additional light would have been good just off to the right of the frame to make him pop a bit more instead of getting lost in the dark background.

^^^^^^^ in regards to not blowing the sky in photos, the only way to do this is balance your flash power with the sun. This can be hard, you have to shoot at the maximum flash sync speed and I sometimes even gang 4 flashes together. Get them as close as possible to the skater without being seen in the frame. Every centimeter your flashes are further away from the skater they are losing their effectiveness.

Or just shoot at sunset, looks way more majestical then anyway

And Cameron's nosegrind photo is fucking rad!
There is a flash to the right, it's just about the exact same power as the one to the left so it ends up looking flat and not so noticeable. If the one to the right had more power (and possibly positioned a bit more to the side) you would have got that nice edge highlight.
Good work, the timing and style on the trick are bullshit good
