OP
SAVE LINCOLN SQUARE 5:30pm tonight at Melbourne, City Town Hall.
They want to ban skateboarding from Lincoln Square, cause they think the public used Lincoln more than skateboarders and that we are disrespectful.
Come support tonight. Don't be lazy! If you care about skateboarding so much, and skate Lincoln every week, then show up!
We need as many people there to show the city we want our support. We don't have any ledge spots at IMAX or the city, this is our best warm up spot.

Wish I could be there to support. I've only skated Lincoln a handful of times, and I can honestly say it's my favourite spot.

What's with the disrespectful claim? Is it a war memorial or something?

Yeah how did it go? It would be a shame if it went. I don't really roll there but it's up to the regulars now to keep it tidy and all that. Not saying it isn't kept that way, I wouldn't know. If it ends up being all good it might be time to get it to be a full permission spot and de capped and all that. You will have to wait a while after this meeting and build good faith ect. I'm happy to help with some advice or whatever in that regard

Point 7 sounds like they were willing to compromise as long as dudes don't fuck it up for the everyone else. Skate during the day, no grog, and watch where you skate. Sounds fair to me. How did it go?

Taken from skatespots.com.au -

"**UPDATE**
This is a sad day for skateboarding. We do not agree with the results of the meeting and believe it comes from a profound misunderstanding of what skateboarding is about.

Mayor Doyle said that he was appalled by the offensive and disrespectful actions of people who used the memorial in Lincoln Square to peform tricks.

“Time’s up for this selfish minority who tried to capture a part of the city for themselves,” he said. “It’s just not on”.

City of Melbourne councillors have voted to redesign the park to make it unsuitable and unattractive for skateboarders.

Works costing up to $300,000 could start by April.

More details here: http://m.heraldsun.com.au/…/r…/story-fni0fit3-1227150317607…"

That's absolutely fucked. $300,000 to be spent to revamp a place to make it unskateable.
Pisses me off.

$300,000 to be spent on redesigning Lincoln Square in Melbourne to make it "skateboarder proof". Council could have probably made a purpose built skate plaza with that money or just reached a compromise with skateboarders (code-of-conduct was suggested) and not spent any money at all. Nice job on preventing a bunch of young people from gathering in a public space for a harmless recreational activity.

Agree it seems like a waste of money and if it wasn't a memorial for the Bali bombings I would say keep fighting it but people get understandably sensitive when it comes to memorials. I sometimes skated that bank to wall spot near the Canberra war memorial until one day a guy came up and blasted me for doing it. The spot is a Vietnam memorial and his Dad (or grandfather?) fought and died in the war. He was totally right and I never skated it again.

I think this one should get chalked up in the "good while it lasted" pile.

The truth of the matter is that is was just an unused square that was rotting away and was barely used by anyone before the council decided to make it a memorial to those that died during the Bali bombings. It would be different if the place was designated as that in the first place like the Shrine of Rememberance but the truth was that in the first instance it was just a dodgy square that was spruced up.

Yeah I skated that same spot near War Memorial once then stopped when I realized what it actually was. In the case of Lincoln Square I dont think the entire thing is a memorial, just one part of it. I could be wrong.

I've been approached by a few locals. It's not something that I'm prepared to personally go into bat for as I don't roll there and so forth.

I would say that you can still win this, and work towards making it a spot that is a permission skate spot. This will take time and good faith.

The elephant in the room is that the minority have ruined it for the majority. Leaving rubbish everywhere and crew focused more on pissing on than skating are causing the problems. It wasn't long ago that the City of Melbourne made a public statement that skateboarders were not disrespecting the memorial. Skateboarding isn't the issue, it's the lurkers.

It's a shame, it is an iconic spot that means so much to Melbourne's skate community. If you skate there, care about it and want it to continue it's up to you. Take control of the joint and boot out the lurkers. Keep it tidy and so forth. Find an advocate in the council and make it easy to go into bat for you.

It will be very unpopular to spend $300k on this nonsense project. There are plenty of solid crew, get together and change the outcome and save your spot. It's easy, but you might have to take a stand against some of the shitcunts that have caused the issues.

Not a popular position, someone's gotta say it.

I can understand why people would want to ban skateboarders from the square because of one certain group of skaters that treat it as there local Friday night piss up spot.
They leave bottles around and then sometimes place the bottles over the top of the fountains (each fountain represents one of the Australians that died) so that the pressure rises and the water squirts higher. To the general public this is pretty disrespectful. I don't think they have a problem as much with te skateboarding is the stupid shit people do around the skating.
I'm sorry but I think we have lost this one.
