Croydon Skatepark consultation Wednesday

portland and nz were renowned for very little in the way of skateparks and local government support for the construction of parks . Melbourne has 3 indoor parks parks like these 2 in nearly every suburb and you complain about the layout and amount of runup . they are not just catering for you. before this was there much call for the park any petitioning or public outcry ?? or did it just happen

Check out some of the stuff those guys are doing. Have a think about the "shuffle area" and "interactive lighting seat zones" or whatever and think about the impact that is having on Australian skatepark design.

People work hard and spend many hours to get stuff moving. It doesn't just happen. I appreciate we have amazing choice and opportunity in Melbourne. One of Convic's strengths is their lobbying and council liasing. It is a great thing and one of the reasons so many parks are happening.

Yes we have great opportinities, however it is how these opportunities are maximised. Are we getting all we can?

Look at the skate path entry at Knox. Rad idea. The simple mistake of how the marble ledges are positioned (at approx $8k a pop maybe??) makes all 10 or so useless. They pitch you into grass or another ledge. It is missing the point to say "at least you have marble ledges stop whinging" it is a wasted opportunity. Do you understand the point I am trying to make here?

Look in short it is a fun looking park, way better than the original plans. The concept and final placement/heights of the obstacles are flawed

T.L.F are you actually a skateboarder??? or do you work for Convic?

The entry path to Knox is disgraceful. Could have been so fun yet turned out to be such a massive waste of money and potential. Perfect example.
Sure, on one hand these places are lucky to have large parks but on the other you always seem to have a large and ever increasing population of scooters, bikers and just about every other annoying absolute cunt possible using them.
It's still a crying shame when they mess up good street areas that give skateboarders a refuge from aforementioned annoyances.
Also skatestoppers are everywhere these days and there are massive black spiked fences around all the schools.........you can't say skateboarders are generally better off these days.

how much money and square footage do you think they had endless supply? it was built not just to cater to you i guess probably like young families , probably just want something for everyone if you dont like the catwalk dont shake yo thing. i understand your point but if you failed to add your input and are unhappy with the result shut up you missed your oppotunity. you did nothing and got something to skate thats worth most likely millions of dollars be thankfull . and if the knox path or whatever is unskateable approach the council about it

I have had plenty of involvement in skatepark design in my area, spoken up about parks and it doesn't go as far as it should. I don't live in Melbourne but knox was a great example made by joshua of money wasted on poorly designed shit that is of little use to anyone, so it's not about what i like or don't. The point has been made in this and other threads that Convic really really know how to sell themselves. The council does one or two design consultations and then that's it because they think with an experienced park designer it should be enough. Requests from skaters can get ignored because they put too much trust in these guys to come up with a good design and you often end up with money wasted on poor design, artwank and useless shit. I'm pretty sure they are mostly architects these days not skaters that is one problem, the other is that they have a reputation for being the best skatepark designers based on their experience and their ability to suck council dick.

"I understand your point but if you failed to add your input and are unhappy with the result shut up you missed your oppotunity"

Man it is hard to generate a response without resorting to telling you to shove it. Read the thread right the way through. Do you think I didn't put in any input or put input into their facebook page ect? The outcomes were influenced by circulating ideas to locals and then them attending the meetings. I spend at least 10 hours every month attending meetings when possible and volunteering my time for skateboarding events. I work 55 hours a week it is difficult to attend all meetings, hence the web being a constructive tool to lobby/suggest ideas ect.

Call me cynical, but I have noticed the plans for stuff not being submitted early online much anymore and meetings held at inconvenient times ie Rosehill at 2pm on a Friday. I hope this is not delliberate.

Anyway TLF you may be content with mediocrity but many are not and do what they can to have their say. Remember these are often large budget facilities with a lifespan of decades.
