Catcher is definitely over-rated, I like JD Salinger's other stuff more.
Oh, of course Hunter S is brilliant. Rum Diaries is my personal favourite of his, soon to be made into a movie starring Johhny Depp (again) apparently.
Forgot to mention Bukowski, Kerouc and Steinbeck before, all obvious choices but brilliant none the less.

Worst book ever, very repetitive. Take drugs, have a wild time, realise your a looser, go to rehab, start all over again.

heaps of people hate catcher in the rye, youre not alone
TTony Harrison17 June 2009you guys seriously need to read JoJo's
Lolita-Vladimir Nabokov
The Unbearable Lightness of Being-Milan Kundera
Darkness at Noon-Arthur Koestler(well worth reading if you enjoyed 1984)
If anyone is into philosophy I suggest Soren Kierkegaard.
Volume 1 of Either/Or is his best work; he can explain the most complex of human emotions in a few words, it's amazing.
Highly recommend it, especially if you ponder a lot.
I'd also recommend On the Road (Jack Kerouac), Great Expectations (Charles Dickens), Brave New World (Aldous Huxley), Moby-Dick or 'The Whale' (Herman Melville) and Catcher in the Rye (J.D Salinger) - even if nobody else does.

read it...
i read slaughterhouse 5 a while ago and i really liked that. i really like bizarre humour like that. Douglas adams style humour where its almost like the author is talking to the reader. Hitch-Hikers guide to the galaxy is awesome too.
just finished reading the satanic bible

A short history of nearly everything, Bill Bryson *****
Has anyone else read His dark materials ???
aka The golden compass series.
Pullman really rips into the church and its effect on society.
Yes geebz. So good. So twisted. So nothing like the movie.
Yeah the movie was terrible.
Apparently it was heavily censored cause the church kicked up a stink.
A
Addo17 June 2009hunter s' book on the hells angels (called hell's angels) is a good read.. recommended
I too would recommend World War Z.
Anything by John Birmingham. He Died With A Felafel In His Hand is a classic funny book (with some lessons on sharing houses). Leviathan is a very interesting history of Sydney. His Axis of Time trilogy is cool too (Modern ynak fleet gets transported back to WW2), and his latest Without Warning (U.S.A. suddenly is obliterated in freaky incident, world goes to hell in a handbasket shortly after) is good too.
Catch 22 by Joseph Heller is great
The Outsider by albert camus is great
Whoever was saying Kurt Vonnegut fuck yeah
Lots of Huxley/Hunter S. fans love that but hate it at the same time
last book i finished was Lord of the Flies. I wish I could be young and on an island hunting pigs.
Haha phenom and tfi, I knew both of you were going to do that.
