Matthew Riley. - 'Ice Station' and 'Temple'. 'Contest' for a bit a sci-fi.

Aussie too!

Sorry mate, but I just fucking hate Riley. I've tried, God how I've tried, to like his books but they just read like a novel a kid in grade 9 would come up with. Such as:

"Jack knew the bomb would go off, so he hid in a 44 gallon drum and braced himself for the thermonuclear explosion. He was thrown into the air but instead of falling to his death grabbed onto a passing plane's wing where he played Uno for an hour or two before killing all the terrorists...."

Shit like that. I love a good story but...sheesh!

I read about one book a week because I can't stand being on public transport. Recent reads include:

John Birminghams "Felafel" and "The Tasmanian Babes Fiasco". Easily one of my favourite authors and a Brissie boy to boot.

Stephen King's Stand, Desperation, Insomnia, Neeful Things, It. I love King. I think, at his best, he is probably one of the best fiction writers going around.

Brent Weeks: Shadows Trilogy. Fictional/fantasy series about a trained assasin.

I need some new books. I'll use this thread as a guide.

Lazlo, have you read King's "Skeleton Crew"? Its a collection of short stories, including "The Myst", that was about 100000 times better than the weak movie adaptation.
Bbraddox21 June 2009
If you want to read some Aussie Sci-fi, try Greg Egan. He's originally a Perthy and he rights some pretty 'hard' sc-fi. I read Distress ages ago and was impressed enough to read everything I could find.
PPazlo_Lanaflex21 June 2009
Russ I've read all of King's books, even the short story ones as well.

Loved Skeleton Crew. Also loved the books that contained:

Rita Hayworth and the Shawshank Redemption
Apt Pupil (OMFG best short story ever)
Langoliers (worst movie adaption ever)

Also all his "Bachman" books which are ace.

Also have a soft spot for Raymond E. Feist who is a master storyteller and author of one of the best fucking fantasy books ever written (Magician). Just read his latest series which was rather good.
PPazlo_Lanaflex21 June 2009
And Kevin J. Andersons Saga of the Seven Suns is a great series of books too if you are into spacey sci fi

Steven King seems to have a long list of awesome books that get turned into low budget, shitty movies.

eg. Thinner.
UUltimate Russ21 June 2009
Steven, Stephen, whatever
PPazlo_Lanaflex22 June 2009
I like to call him Stavros Kinge.

But yeah, his books are either great movies or shitty ones.

Shawshank Redemption is an awesome movie....It and The Stand are shitty mini-series.

The Stand is in my top 5 of all time awesome books. Just read it again...all 1300 pages.
GGEEBZ22 June 2009
I love my horror books but I just havent really gotten into king.

Maybe I have just read the shit ones.

He has such a huge catalogue its hard to know where to start.
PPazlo_Lanaflex22 June 2009
Sometimes his best books aren't the gory horror you kind of expect.

Start at It. I did when I was 13 and it changed me forever. Also Pet Cemetary is a good'un.

Needful Things is fucking great. As are the twin books Desperation and The Regulators (one written as Bachman one as King).

Also the OG Running Man short story was a great read but the movie was so shit. Also in that book was the short story "The Long Walk" which was brilliantly written.

And Misery is easily the most "OMFG I can't read another page because I am going to lose my biscuits" book I have read. Not a bad movie either and Kathy Bates won an Oscar for her role in it.
FFurtanken22 June 2009
Fuck yeah "the regulators" and "desperation"
Tak is sick.
PPazlo_Lanaflex22 June 2009
TAK!!!

Awesome "character", eh?

I want my dweeem fwotah!!
FFurtanken22 June 2009
Yeah I personally enjoyed regulators better.
But I read it before desperation.
PPazlo_Lanaflex22 June 2009
Same man. The Regulators had that WTF thing going on.

I saw Desperation on Fox the other night but had already locked in a night of "movies we can both watch"
FFurtanken22 June 2009
I didn't even know they made a movie.
How about that.
PPazlo_Lanaflex22 June 2009
It has Tom Skerrit in it...
UUltimate Russ22 June 2009
