Somebody mentioned Lance Armstrong's ghostwritten pile of commercial cliches? Give me a break.
Some great novelists to check out:
Philip Roth
John Steinbeck
Arthur Koestler
Norman Mailer
J.M. Coatzee
I've written a novel. It looks like it's gonna be published early next year. You guys will probably bag it out, but I don't care. It's called 'Voices in the Park'.
Synopsis?

....I don't read fiction anymore - haven't for many years.
What an awesome outlook on life!
I said I don't read fiction. Which means I read non-fiction. Obsessively. I've always been a voracious reader and always will be.

Chip, you should stop 'hating' people that you haven't met. I bet your hero Lance Armstrong wouldn't approve of all this hatred. I was gonna suggest that you come for a roll with me and Anthony Gonzalez whe he's over here, but you've become so damn nasty.
Just chill out... go for a skate instead of thinking how much you 'hate me'.
feet are recovering from surgery, so i cant skate = hate time on skateparks....
NAMEDROPPPP again. however ill come

Pazlo_Lanaflex26 June 2009I am also writing a book. Hard to find time to do it but it sure is fun.
I also 'scored' a book today. When I say 'scored' I mean I found it on a bus seat. Its a travelling book...a fiction book, not a book about travelling. When I am finished with it I must leave it on a bench somewhere for someone else to read.
Awesome concept.

do you mean 'biography'?
Yep Laszlo. You just gotta set a certain time period for writing each day, and stick to it. If you can do a page a day, you'll have a first draft within a year or two. My novel took me three and a half ears, but I get easily distracted by things like skateboard forums.
there were plans for a thing where books would be left on public transport for people to read and then put back for someone else to read when they were done. not sure what happaned to those plans though.

Ron Swanson26 June 2009Nieve, what I do sometimes is give books to mates/people I know casually and tell them to pass them on when they are done. Also encourage people to pass on their books they don't want anymore.
I guess it's a fair obvious point to make, but Salvo's and etc. can be a goldmine for books.
To those that live in or go to St Kilda, there is a second hand book shop (or it used to be there anyway) just off the corner of Barkly Street on Carlisle Street that had a dollar bin out the front that used to have sweet deals.
Dunno if it's still there, I haven't lived in St Kilda in four years, but it's most definitely worth a look if it's still there.

Bryson is amazing. Down Under is also great and the book he wrote about hiking the Appalachian trail is top notch.
I gotta say Terry Pratchett as well. Sure it's comedic fantasy but his use of metaphor is unparalleled.
As for writing a novel, I started about 10 times and never saw it through. I guess having a job, a million commitments and now a new language to learn I just can't set aside that hour a day Brains so realistically suggests.
pratchett books are so expensive for what they are, and you can never find them in the second hand stuff.

Pazlo_Lanaflex28 June 2009Geebz...I have nearly every Pratchett book written. His latest books are quite dark and nasty in parts but fuck I love him. One of my favourite authors. His comedic timing is one of a kind.
He won't be putting out many books now though. He's got an advanced and agressive form of Alzheimer's disease. Poor cunt.
I met him at a book signing about 15 or so years ago. Top dude and very down to earth.
Yeah laz ive read a few. I liked the few I have read even though some of his humour is totally cringe worthy (i guess thats the point).
P
Pazlo_Lanaflex28 June 2009Yeah, that is kind of the point.
The books revolving around the cops are pretty LOLworthy.
The whole cohen the barbarian concept cracks me up.
UUltimate Russ28 June 2009Opinions on Tom Clancy?
I read Rainbow Six and it wasn't as cringeworthy and "Americaaaaa! Fuck Yeah!" as i thought it would be.

Pazlo_Lanaflex28 June 2009Ahhh yeah, the gang of elderly cunts!! I love the dude in the wheelchair
"wut? Wutdidhesay?"
Guards! Guards! is a cracker too. The bit where Vimes is holding the dragon and pointing it at some bad guys and says almost line for line the Dirty Harry quote is darn clever.
"Now I know what your thinking," said Vimes (holding a dragon) "You're wondering, after all this excitement, has it got enough flame left? And y'know, I aint so sure myself...'"
I hate tom Clancy books.
