Guys I've been playing guitar for around 8 years now but only electrics never really got into acoustic but I would like to.

Would I get a decent semi acoustic for around $500?
DDeathMoth11 Dec 2011
You could probably find something that sounds ok and feels ok to play. It won't be made of any kind of premium woodz or have good electrics but you'll be able to get something mediocre. I can't recommend a brand but for $500 you'd probably find something made in Japan that is good enough.

for $500, you could get a Fender CD140SCE which are pretty good, a few different types of cort guitars, Yamaha make an awesome guitar which i believe is the FG720ME or something like that. If you're in sydney, pop into Allans and Billy Hydes over at Taren Point and i'll help you out and get you rad discounts.

+1 on Yamaha's

hey invisi, check the last page for my question haha

+1 on yamahas too.

Some of their electrics are a bit dorky looking but some of their basses, arch tops and acoustics are really nice but most importantly good value for money. Yamaha and also Cort seem to offer some of the best quality for ya dollar.

does anyone here have the down low on bargain type websites that sell guitars and post them as cheap as it gets?

yo deathy, ginger beer, fox if you're out there, and anyone else who feels the need to contribute,
I'm looking at upgrading from my current amp, got a peavey 50 watt valve king, love the sound but the amp itself is unreliable, solder joints are always going, its blown up twice and heaps of other shit has gone wrong with it, i think i just somehow got the dodgy one from the factory. I've been looking at the fender hot rod deville and twin reverb but just wondering if theres anything else on the market i should consider aswell.

i play a lot of clean stuff but also love a bit of gain.

cheers fullas

You "love a bit of gain" in what context? Like a wailing lead sound? Mid-gain crunch? Metal?

Those amps you mentioned are great options. I have a Fender blues deluxe reissue (Mexican made like the deville) and I love it. I play my tele through it and it's excellent for blues. For a little gain I use a Rat or a Maxon tubescreamer-type pedal (can't remember which one off the top of my head).

Those amps will never really excell with anything more than a mid gain type sound but for cleans and mild saturated tones they're great. Check the speakers, most fenders have either eminence or Jensen speakers. The ones with Jensens, if you've got the extra coin, are the tits.

If you need a bit more gain Fender Supersonic goes alright. They have a really tight looking mini-stack. If you want more gain again, in that same price/wattage range, Orange have a bunch of good sounding amps for cheap. They make their cheaper amps in Korea, great sound, low price tag. Maybe you'll have some technical difficulties at some point but the tone is there. The rockerverb and thunderverb come in various sizes and even the tiny terror has a rad sound if paired with a nice speaker.

"bit of gain" as in a fat lead sound. i dabble in a bit of everything really except metal. is the rat the one you had up for sale awhile ago? i don't own a distortion pedal just always used the lead channel on the peavey, something i might also have to look into with those fenders.

haven't really looked at any orange's yet but i'll have to plug in next time I'm down at the local. my main concern was not losing the quality of sound for the volume, which I've heard happens with some of the marshalls

cheers for the help mate
DDeathMoth6 Feb 2012
coolio. well if you don't want a hi gain sound and its more clean and saturated lead tones have a squiz at the Rivera range.

the Fandango 55w 2x12" is pretty damn good. has a crystal clear clean channel and a nice warm saturated lead channel through celestion speakers. if you've got the extra $ they're a damn good amp. i know plenty of smokin hot blues and jazz players who use them. if you're interested i might even know someone who is selling one.

Just wondering if anyone could give me some advice on buying an acoustic guitar for around $1000. I have been looking at the maton m225 anything else I should check out? Cheers.
Sshutdown23 Feb 2012
I dont know shit about acoustic guitars sorry mang. I do know I nearly bought one once and I had a boner for Matons at the time. Everyone who seemed to know their shit had Matons and they just sounded great when I played em in music shops.

If I were to buy one id be making sure it had a pickup built in and that it sounded tits through an amp as well as unplugged.
Ppandapanda24 Feb 2012
I'm in the same boat as shutdown here^^
a couple people i work with swear by cole clark guitars over the matons, but I'm pretty sure they have a bigger price tag
DDeathMoth24 Feb 2012
matons and cole clarkes are both great but by no means the only options. it's easy to test acoustics in store. just grab em and have a lash. you can tell straight away if it has the sound you're after, and if it feels good in your hands and on your lap, then you're onto something.

if you're paying $1000 its not going to be a complete piece of shit so trust your ears and your hands, try not to worry too much about the name on the headstock.
Sshutdown24 Feb 2012
P.S. Reason I dont have an accoustic guitar is so when other muso's come to visit they dont pick one up and start playing it / pulling their dick on it...

Keeping it electric and the amps hidden in the cupboard keeps the muso tossathon at bay..
