Skateboarding won't ever get the mainstream attention it deserves. I just view the skating in contests as a completely different style of skating, call it “Consistent Skating”. I can’t really relate to it at all, but it’s just a different type of skating which can only really be measured by a contest – which fortunately for sponsors is good for the entertainment value.
In street skating we understand that winning a medal isn’t the best achievement you can have as a skater, the SOTY trophy even seems debatable these days. Even Nyjah knows he needed to release his street footage of before he got any real recognition by his peers.
A skater’s ability is measured by the quality of the tricks seen in their videos parts, because being able to pull a sick trick 99 times out of 100 is cool, but being able to land a way better trick only needs to be landed once, as long as there’s footage to prove it. The “X-Games Real Street” is attempting to tap into that market (I guess it’s kinda cool…?) but there will always be an untouchable part of skating which remains in the streets. Tom Penny chilled in France for years, and just because no one saw any footage it didn’t mean he wasn’t still the best. Antwuan Dixon hasn’t skated for ages, who knows if he ever will skate again… but he had one of the best parts ever filmed and it was his style that mattered not just the tricks.
Skating is also art-form, again it’s just a different approach or style of skateboarding “ARTY SKATING”. Skateboarding has Rodney Mullen, Soccer have this guy:

"Kids will start skateboarding to become Olympians that was the last thing on my mind when I started." - krim
THIS!!! Skating is about going against this shit. I started skating because I couldn't kick a football straight to save my life and I didn't wanna get my skull crushed by jocks on the football field. Skating is already getting fucked in the ass by dudes in fluro shorts riding penny boards, we don't need even more people like that getting into it.
I'm not claiming to know what skateboarding is actually about, because that's a subjective thing for the individual to question, but I'm 100% certain that what it's NOT and will never be about is 'training' and winning medals on international TV.

"Kids will start skateboarding to become Olympians that was the last thing on my mind when I started." - krim most dream of being sponsored and will try well into there 20s , whats the difference .
if skateboarding were an olympic sport it would surely create jobs in the industry improve facilities nation wide and provide opportunities for travel for those already trying to make a career out of it . the olympics happen every 4 years is it really that big of a deal ? grimwood THIS!!! how is a kid in a fluro shirt ruining skateboarding ? how the fuck does that matter ?oh and you dont like football so you skateboard , you unique little snow flake . You dont like that stuff because you think its stealing your "cool" i bet you hate it when people say to you " i use to skate " or talk to you about skating when their riding a penny or long board. What happens on tv and what happens at your local skatepark, footy oval,b-ball court or golf course are completely different and when these sports are deemed legitimate by governments ir becomes easier to participate in them and when success seems a possibility on a professional level governments put more time money and energy into it.

Grim your just being that anti-jock, anti-fashion dude… There’s jocks in skateboarding too, and everyone else’s fashion is always whack anyway, but it’s just clothes so who gives a fuck. Don’t hate on football it’s a good game… except after so many years watching skate videos your brain gets rewired to need more constant stimulation, ball games can’t hold your attention span if you’re used to the intensity of switch 360 flip nosegrinds. I know what you mean though, I don’t really watch football anymore, but you can if you have a few beers to dumb you down.
Exactly T.L.F., more attention on skateboarding can only be good because it leads to more people recognise the skill involved and to appreciate the discipline. Government funding comes after more people within the community recognise how positive it can be for the youth, which eventually leads to more skateparks.
Penny boards aren’t ruining skateboarding; they’re just giving kids a misconception about what it’s about. At least they’re better than scooters, and eventually the switched on kids will be drawn into it skating further, realising they need a real deck because you can’t do many tricks on a the little floopy bit of plastic they got in their bertie beatle showbag. It’s like people who say “All TV & music these days sucks”.. well that’s the case if all you watch is big bang theory & listen to miley cyrus. You’ve always gotta dig deeper into something to get to the good shit, otherwise you miss out on awesome shit like breaking bad. (well I guess I don’t know what music is cool these days).. Meanwhile if you want to take something positive from the penny board fad, it’s the cool ads.
The big question is will there be any Australian's participating. and If anyone really does want to compete, how do they get selected for the Australian team.

The Shaun White snowboarding winter olympics ads with gladiator music and emotional slo-mo are the most cringeworthy thing I've ever seen...imagine that with skateboarding...uhhh
We'd get cool skateparks though

I guess this statement justifies that most statistics are made up on the spot. "Meanwhile, there are 990 skate parks in Australia- growing at a rate of two new parks per week since 2005." According to that statement there were only 54 skateparks in australia pre 2005, and since there have been 936 built.

TimFranklin4presiden 20:56 24/Oct/13 .... If it finally became a 'real sport', the government might put some real dollars into it, ha what a joke.
Are you kidding? In Melbourne nearly every suburb has a skatepark, and just about every Victorian town as a park of some level, a lot of which cost hundreds of thousands of dollars. I am amazed at the level of investment (past and present) in skateboarding/bmx. It is just skateboarding after all.

What I should have said is 'effort' in the place of 'dollars'. Because if it weren't for key people in the skate community who have a foot in political circles all our skateparks would look the same. Yes there are HEAPS of skateparks all across Australia, but only recently have they recognised the NEED for a functional and unique park for skaters. I agree they have spent loads on a relatively 'niche' sport/hobby. But many of these dollars have been mis-spent. i.e. late 90's early 2000's where loads of parks were made many literally the same design.

What's your opinion on this. I do see how it could be good for skateboarding to build skatepark s but I don't think it's worth giving up skateboarding values. The main reason I like skateboarding is to be better then yourself and I feel as if it makes it in the Olympics it will turn officially into a "sport" The wsf released the top 10 street skateboarders and I don't even know some of them. Question is do we really need the Olympics or do they need us to make more money off ratings?
Ship has sailed, xgaymes and the street league are pretty much there. The thing that feels wrong to me about it being in the olympics is that skating is not a 'clean' sport like most the events they endorse. You can cut Nyjahs hair and put the Nuggets of the world on major non-skate sponsors but end of the day its all a big con / facade. In reality its a bunch of formerly depressed kids, many from broken families, taking their anger out on themselves, eating shit 9 times out of 10 for most their skating life, smashing faces into concrete, rolling ankles, acting like ADD patients and generally being unemployable by the time they are in their mid 20's.
Legitimising skateboarding just seems wrong in every sense of the word. Let it be the wolf it is and be proud of it, don't dress it up in sheeps clothing (as funny as an in-joke that might seem)

Doesn't really bother me. Contest skating is already a sport and has all the bullshit other sports have (dime contests excluded). Skateboarding itself, my enjoyment of it , the content I enjoy and companies I like remain unaffected by all that shit so I don't care either way.

I'm all for any money that ends up supporting people who are good at riding useless wooden toys, but there's an interesting argument when you start to imagine skaters wearing cheesy uniforms, the US team generally dominating most the field and then deciding who is going to actually compete with considerations for drug testing.
I don't buy into the purist argument that it will ruin skateboarding, because energy drinks and corporate sponsors have kinda already done that, but at the end of the day that doesn't really have any real affect on everyday skaters out in the streets getting their kicks from busting gnarly tricks out of no where.
If any skaters really want to be a purist, they need to stop worrying about filming every trick and just skate for the joy of it every now and then, see how you feel about yourself when the best trick tithe ever landed was by yourself without any witnesses. Nothing matters, who gives a shit
