Cruiser boards - good or bad?

OP
Today, a skate shop owner told me that he's selling more cruiser boards than regular set-ups.

I've been seeing more hipsters on cruiser boards, compared to 'real' skateboarders on the Melbourne streets. Even at some skateparks...

Is this good or bad for skateboarding in the long run? Or does it not matter at all?

i dont think it really makes a difference to us, they dont hang out at parks much just cruise the streets. Its good that they are spending the money at our shops though

I think we probably sell as many cruisers as "complete popsicles". It dosn't phase me. They are something we'd stock regardless of how healthy the "normal" skate market was. Some cruisers can be super fun.

If the skateparks started to get packed with dickheads riding them with zero park etiquette then we would probably drop them on principle. Not a good idea to be actively profiting off something that massively annoys who you are really meant to be there for.

A lot of kids who have bought them end up getting a normal board (or "trick board" as they like to call it, which always makes me laugh) so at least they can do a little more than just roll from A to B.

So much better than scooters anyway.

yeah i keep my "trick board" in the boot of my car and i got a cruiser at home that i use for going down the road to the shop or the beach.

i see a lot of kids rolling around on cruisers but then i see them at the park with regular set ups as well.

I dig the cruiser thing, the more people jumping on board and realizing that skateboarding is a whole lot of fun is fine by me. If they are fahionista's and posers doing it, so what, some of them will get into it and probably buy a a better set up suited for street or park riding if they are serious. Heaps of regular skateboarders have a fun little cue for transport and fooling around on, so it can't really be pigeonholed. The more people getting into it the better for skate shops and skateboarding in general.

Skateboarding is FUCKING HARD these days so it's a good way for people to get into it without the pressure of learning tricks etc.

BOTTOM LINE... THEY'RE NOT SCOOTERS (= thumbs up).

As for fashion retards using them... skateboarding clothing and show companies have been relying on those fools for $$$ for decades now.

the only problem i see with cruisers is some of the people riding them. not sure about other towns and citys but on the sunny coast the majority of cruiser riders are just footy jocks buying z flexes cause there the next big thing. As others have said they are better than scooters but when the footy boys go around fucking shit up around here and they are seen running off with skateboards it tends to give us a bad name. But thats just my opinion.

Cruiser boards are good fun. I got one of my mates to cut out a cruiser shape on an old board though, so it actually feels alright. The penny boards are alright, but they are just way to small.

As for non-fundamentalist skateboarders buying them, meh, share it round and get skateboarding out there in any fashion.

I know Creature made a football (soccer ball?), I think a few companies need to start making footballs, you can ride down the street playing 'skate rugby' and give the jocks a bad name.

I have a large Real board. About 9 inches wide with a nasty spine spearing nose. Big soft spitties...works a treat.
