hmm i really don't know. i don't think so
Guitar Thread
someone asked for advice on building a guitar a few pages back. dont do it! unless you really do your reasearch, or get someone who knows what there doing to help.
this is mine, for my yr12 design + tech project. turned out as good as i expected, but if i were to do it again, i do alot of things differently.
just has shitty no-name pickups in, not gonna bother with that for a guiatr like this. it still plays fine, and im stoked on it. i'm a drummer aswell, only play a little guitar, self taught

yer i have a randall half stack dude and it kicks ass, its just that when my mate plays his ibanez though my amp and all others ive seen he has alot more punch and power while cranking the midds and highs and some bass and he has an active pick up and i only have pick ups that came with the guitar and i play alot of death metal so i crank the volume no matter what and the gain
johno you'd be suprised how much better your shit will sound when u turn the gain down a bit. i play a lot of metal but use fuck all gain in a couple of stages. i have a Maxon OD808 (which is basically a vintage tubescreamer) with gain on about 4 giving me a tight mid range goin into my amp. then the amp is only gained on about 5 on the lead channel. its not distorted as fuck but sounds tight and probably closer to what you'd hear on a record than a full blown gain on 11 kind of sound.
I've made a couple of bodies, using ply. Just cut the middle layers to make room for all the stuff that goes in the guts. Top layer cut out to fit the knobs/switches and pickups. Just gotta make sure you position the bridge correctly to match the scale length of the neck, and make sure you put everything in straight (neck bolts and bridge) so the strings run parallel down the neck (otherwise the strings will start leaning to one side as you go up the neck). Getting the neck to sit so that the action will be usable can be a bit tricky, but you can pack slithers of cardboard in behind the neck bolts to fine tune the angle of the neck.
I wouldn't say the ones I made were anything too amazing, but they worked, and it was fun.
Use a piece of crap to start with though, because you don't wanna fuck up a nice guitar just for the sake of a little experiment.

yer hrmmmm i dont use pedals though, and i think i am going to order a dimebucker because they have awesome clean and kick ass distortion.
may i ask why you use a vintage tubescreamer for metal
may i ask why you use a vintage tubescreamer for metal
because i know what i'm talking about!
ha nah
its cos they have this fuckin wicked low mid range... its real tight sounding. now i'm not talking about using a tubescreamer full gained into a clean amp. tube screamers have always been at their best when u give them mild gain as a booster into rad valve amp. by using fairly low gain on ya tubescreamer (or in my case the maxon OD808) your offering up the amp a super tight tone with a lot of clarity... then by overdriving that sound with your amp, again with not too much gain, it all adds up to a filth sound. heavy, tight in the mids (which are the most important bits) and nice and clear. no monged out notes when u play wierd chord voicings.
in a nutshell tubecreamer for metal is for tone more than distortion.

aww nice sounds different and interesting but i hate fucking around with pedals
no fuckin around involved. plug the cunt in adjust the 3 knobs... shred. its a pretty common pedal for metal players when used in the context i've spoken of
yer but id rather turn on the amp and play because then id have to adjust the pedal to suit the amp ect which takes time
most metal players i know turn on there half stack crank it loud as shit with distortion flat out sometimes almost to distorted, if you live in melb or going down to melb any time soon go to the art house, you will see some fucking good metal go down there

mate if all they're doing is cranking up their amp it sounds shit. i don't even need to hear it to tell you that. seriously. no matter what amp you have, cranked, heaps of gain, playing flat bicky riffs, it sounds shit. you gotta realise this then you'll have the killer tone
ps i haven't touched my pedal for at least a year. i worked it out day one and have the fucker dialed. its like putting in a new pickup, one day its in, fuck with the dials, sound sorted
Gotta agree about it not sounding the best just plugged and cranked.
But I mean, if maybe giving the tone knob a little adjustment before you play every now and then is a big hassle, what do you do about tuning?

Or is it just an image thing - like so you can look cool with that "I just plug in and crank it WOOOO!!!" attitude?
lol you guys obviously dont get in to metal that much then,.
are you guys in bands ??? do you get into the metal scene or do you just sit at home jamming to metal
metal is suppose to be cranked dude, metal has that dont give a shit just crank it and play attitude.
lol of course people adjust there bass treb and mids to suit the band or to suit there ear
sif lots of distortion sounds good distortion is always awesome
the reason why im so one sided to this is probably because all i play is metal, you guys prob play other genres i believe sound is just a personal thing for you and your band. getting a dimebucker soon and super hyped

did you just call killswitch engage and children of bodom "old school metal" ?
look at your post before my last one if you can't understand why i called you ignorant. deathy and foxa have been listening to and playing metal for fuckin YEARS and i only know that through paying attention to what they post on this site.
you got given some advice but instead of taking it, you decided to assume that everyone knows less about metal than you.
p.s. i'm trying really hard not to name drop right now.

Aren't children of bodem kinda just glammy kinda poppy but with some dropped tunings?Just simple shit yeah?
