iv got an epi sg
bought it for like £300 second hand
pretty good

and iv got a tom delong sig model strat
got that for about £300 second hand aswell

both are pretty good guitars
DDeathMoth7 Aug 2008
don't mean to rain on your parade but i'd have to disagree. they could have been good value buys, but not good guitars. and if you paid in pounds for that Epi SG... that sucks cos epiphone aren't worth a pinch of shit. stop buying them people!!!
DDeathMoth7 Aug 2008
hang on... second hand??? boy you got duped!
--Ryan-7 Aug 2008
Hey deathmoth and Fox i wanna start recording some shit but i dunno shit about settings and stuff so what i usually do it turn everything on my marshall to 10 and pull back the contour to about 5 and the bass to like 6
Tips on new guitar, amp settings, recording etc etc???

MMr Fox7 Aug 2008
What do you want tips on? What are you having trouble with? What gear are you using?
--Ryan-7 Aug 2008
umm im pretty much a downy when it comes to tone and settings etc
My stuff... Epi Explorer, MG250dfx Marshall, and soon to get a MBOX, also trying to get a new guitar before crissy mabey a dean 7 string or sumthing any idears ?
MMr Fox7 Aug 2008
Deathy or someone else might have a clue about the MBOX - I don't. Not really much point in providing tips if you haven't even had a go at recording anything yet.
And ah...I don't really believe in 7 strings, but then I reckon dropped D tuning is a bit of a cheat...
--Ryan-7 Aug 2008
Nah i usually play shit in E standard but for some songs it needs to be in D
Do you have any comments on what type of guitar i should get? im into like real heavy metal but also like clean stuff and like funk and jazz is this too much for just one guitar to handle?
MMr Fox7 Aug 2008
Yeah I reckon if you get something with split-able hum-buckers you'll be able to cover plenty of ground - run the humbucker for your metal, and split it of to a single to get more of that bright single coil sorta sound for your funk and stuff. Really depends alot on taste though, so just go to shops and try out a bunch of guitars. I'm pretty out of the loop as far as what's coming out these days, so someone else would be better suited at recommending guitar models and junk.

i bought an epi LP last year and i think its actually really good. i didnt have a few grand to throw out on a guitar but its got a real nice action, looks great and its fine for the type of stuff i play. im going to slap some new pick ups in it and it should be a really nice souding guitar and for the price im real happy.

f the hatersss, sure its not the best guitar out there but you know i dont have 6 grand to buy a new gibson LP which these days will look like someones trodden on it anyway
--Ryan-7 Aug 2008
I was looking at this Greash before and liked it enough to buy it

...then i saw it was almost twenty grand :(
CClockwork7 Aug 2008
Oi Stuckey, i've been building/modding a few guitars recently, what do you want to know?
TThe Stuckey7 Aug 2008
Gee, whatever you reckon I should know.
I guess just about shaping the body/neck, dimensions, materials etc.
DDeathMoth7 Aug 2008
Ryan... your best bet for finding a good tone out of your amp is gunna be a lot different to us tell you what numbers to dial in. i wouldn't be just turning everything to 10 and winding out some contour. those amps sound pretty wack but if you do get an MBox, buy an SM57 mike and stick that in front of it. record your self playing on those settings and go "oh fuck i don't like that sound". then spend some time dialing the sounds into your amp. when you're convinced you've got the hell sound record them again, if it still sucks, turn your headphones up way loud and play and move the microphone around the speaker real slow. you'll find the sweet spot and also trip about how much the mike affects your tone.

as for guitars just get something sick. all the good metal guitars are well documented in magazines and shit just find which one feels best... and don't buy a guitar without playing heaps first
--Ryan-8 Aug 2008
Ahh ok thanks deathy! how much would the SM57 mike be roughly so i can get an image in my head of how much moolah i need.
DDeathMoth8 Aug 2008
you don't really want to pay more that 200 for an SM57, you'd be pretty bummed to pay that much. but yeh if you're buying an mbox you should be budgeting to have an SM57, a mic stand and a decent mic cable... plus some decent headphones at the very minimum
MMr Fox8 Aug 2008
Leem make a reasonably budget value version of the Shure - goes for about 60-70 I think. I went that way because I needed five mic's for the drumkit. But if your'e going all out with everything else there's no point skimping out on the mic to save $100.
TTrogdor the Burninat8 Aug 2008
What drum set up you got Fox?
MMr Fox8 Aug 2008
I dunno. Might be an Encore or something...something not too fancy. Had it for up near fifteen years now, but just got it back in action recently after a good 5-6 years of not playing. Re-skinned it, got a couple of new crashes and stuck in the double kick.
DDRIFTz0R8 Aug 2008
I did end up buying one of those DM-4 Line 6 Distortion Modelers, they retail for about 600 - 650 at billy hydes...I put 200 on it on ebay expecting it to go over and managed to get it for 160 posted, I'll let you know how it goes and might record some clips
