Mr Fox28 Apr 2009LDF if your guitar keeps going up your doing something wrong. My guess, either you don't use the tuner all the time, and tune by ear - playing kinda loosens the strings, so in between playing they pull tight again, especially the notes you play more. If you're tuning down I guess you hit the bottom strings alot more, then probably tune to the bottom string by ear next time you play.
My other guess would be you give the strings a stretch before each time you start playing, then after you've tuned it, the strings will settle back up after the stretching. Don't stretch them in so much if that's the case.
HI PIG!! What's cracking?
could have something to do with the neck tension or bridge tension. so you're neck or bridge (depending if you have a floating trem) might be set up with a certain tension to accomodate a particular string gague in standard tuning. they're set like this to keep everything ace, the neck straight and the bridge at the right angle.
if you were to tune down but the neck and/or the bridge still have the same tension, you will find them taking advantage over the lesser tension of the strings hence causing either the neck or bridge to move in a way that tightens your strings.
i don't know much about neck tensioning with a truss rod but i've used a floating bridge since i was a kid and i can tell you that the tension of the bridge causes all kinds of wierd shit when you change tunings
what sort of bridge is on that tele? they're pretty much fixed aren't they with a simple trem.
M
Mr Fox28 Apr 2009I was assuming that it's fixed bridge.
But still even with a floaty bar, just going from a semi tone below concert pitch to (I figure he meant to say) dropped C# shouldn't throw it out that much, unless the neck is made of plastic or something.
L
LDF28 Apr 2009Thanks Fox. I don't use the tuner. Everything is by ear. I just thought there might be a certain guitar(s) that are made to hold a drop c or something. But you answered my question perfectly.
And Death, It's just normal bridge as far as I know.
It's a lovely guitar don't get me wrong. Just seein if there's anything to help.
It's weird cause I think through a drop c song the other day it tuned up on one string. Maybe the neck is used to standard tuning? It was only slight. But enough to notice by musical people.
M
Mr Fox28 Apr 2009You'll probably find it will stay closer to in tune if you tune the other strings to the D string as it wouldn't get as stretched out when you're playing, and accordingly it wouldn't shrink back so much. Or probably even better would be to go off the bass players D string, as the bass is less likely to go out of tune.
Oh yeah...IN YOUR FACE DEATHY pfft floaty bar indeed hrumph!

um what?
hey you say something about floating trem not throwing it out much when you go down half step. it does a wierd thing. you tune it and then tension of the bridge keeps pulling the bridge downwards. you keep tuning eventually you get it to stay in tune but you lose action on the bridge. i used to keep my back plate off so if i tuned down i released some spring tension and it leveled out really easy
but yeh, obviously not the case of a tele
I play guitar so often yet still don't own a really nice one, but for some fucked up reason I own a good quality fender bass.
Anyway, I'm looking for something new to learn (possibly a new style) I've been playing a bit of Megadeth stuff lately (Tornado of souls, Hangar 18 etc.) suggestions would be appreciated (classical would be nice)
lul if you're wanting to learn classical you're going to need to find yourself a good teacher, to try and self teach.
*dont' try and self teach.
learn some billy corgan solo's
^please dont.
haha inconvenient timing, you get the point.
M
Mr Fox29 Apr 2009Agreed altah
i need some help to set the action for my guitar
and i think i fucked my volume knob because its really loose know how can i fix this
try killing yourself.
johno in regards to your action, you need to tell us what sort of guitar it is.
L
LDF29 Apr 2009Here. Let Mr. Petrucci do the talking!
umm fixed the knob problem haha
now the guitar i have is a esp explorer shape
no floyd rose
also have another problem
the guitar isnt picking up any sounds when its pluged in
is the power on?
Llizard kinggg29 Apr 2009Check.
- Volume.
- Lead.
- Power.
dw figured it out
the wiring at the back on the volume switch was fucked. It had been twisted nd snaped off clean so i have to re solder the shit
M
Mr Fox30 Apr 2009Johno if I'm guessing right, your bridge should have a screw on each side. Screw them in to lower the action. Screw them out to raise it.
This is gonna throw your intonation out though. If you raise the action you'll need to move the bridge saddles away from the nut.
Make sense?
M
Mr Fox30 Apr 2009Oh yeah that's for if the buzz is up the top of the neck. If it's more towards the headstock then you'll probably need a truss rod adjustment. Or a slim chance a new nut might do the trick.
yer thanks man i know what ya mean now
i gotta set the action for drop c tuning because that is what i will be writing most of my songs in and using my other guitar for standard
