PIG..12 Jan 2010I play with a floyd.
Sup?
I
invisi12 Jan 2010ive been playing for 6 years and just bought a second hand guitar with a floyd rose on it
but
its missing the alan key bolts up the top and the bar that is held down by them
so ive put strings on it and am just playing with out a whammy bar and without that top bit
is it bad for the neck?
P
PIG..12 Jan 2010No, shouldn't affect the neck.
Only tuning if you were to use the wammy bar.
You should be able to pick those parts up cheap as.

StewMac is awesome.
D
DeathMoth12 Jan 2010would you by any chance be talking about the nut when you say "the top bit"??? if so in floyd rose land we call this a locking nut.
it is why a floyd rose system is often refered to as a double locking trem. the string is locked in at the bridge and then the nut once the strings are all tuned and stretched in. once you lock the nut, you make a fine tune adjustment with the tuners on the bridge then unless your whole axe is a piece of ass you should be able to swing off the trem arm, one handed, naked and blind pissed and the cunt will hold its tune
I
invisi12 Jan 2010thanks dudemen
P
PIG..12 Jan 2010No troubles.
For the record I HIGHLY recommend grabbing the parts and completing your floyd setup.
I only got my first floyd a few months back and have been loving EVERY second of it.
Trying to incorporate it into your usual practice is super fun.
T
TFI12 Jan 2010Yeah, dont buy cheap japanese knockoff guitars with floyd roses, cause if you use the whammy bar it'll go out of tune like a retarded kid in a karaoke competition.
P
PIG..12 Jan 2010Japanese knockoffs are generally OK.
Its the korean etc ones that are the concern.
Japanese made guitars are often very high quality
D
DeathMoth13 Jan 2010Nice Flog
word pig. My 89 ibanez is Japanese, and it's of a pretty high fucking quality except i've let the bridge rust out on it. i wouldn't ever replace it with a new Ibanez, not only would it cost me 3G's to get one of the same quality, it wouldn't be of the same quality
F
Fetus13 Jan 2010love the tobacco floggo, if I were to get an LP it'd be that colour

PIG..1 Feb 2010M
Mrs. Nesbet1 Feb 2010So i went into a local guitar shop the other day and i seen a copy of an eastwod airline (cant remember the model) thats pretty similar in shape to jack white's airline, but with some more electronics... Feels real nice, light as fuck, small (how i like em) and its $600, in baby blue and cream. Only thing is its by Harlem, and i can't find a review on any harlems that aren't filthy skull/flame guitars... So if anyone knows how they go please help a nigga out

shutdown1 Feb 2010floyd rose suck arse.
seriously, if you even remotely care about tone get rid of those peices of terd. There is literally no good use for a tremolo like that unless you are playing in a 'kick start my heart' cover band.. I grew up learning on one of these heaps (Ibanex EX series) and it took me at least 2 years on a Les Paul to un-do all the bad style and shit techniques..
My advice, get a fixie, raise the action, put the thickest strings known to man on it and if you must shred speed solos, do it on that setup.. your dexterity will be awesome, your string control / vibrato will be 100% better and your tone will be worth jizzing on..
fixed bridges for life..
G
Ginger Beer1 Feb 2010thats a beautiful axe shutdown. Looks awesome to play. Wish i had enough dough for a prs
T
The Stuckey1 Feb 2010cross between a prs and a les?
sounds like a fucking wet dream
P
PIG..1 Feb 2010Wish I could agree with you Ben.
There's alot of sonic territory to explore with Floyds.
My obsession with 80's hair metal obviously draws me towards floyds but the versatility it affords me is exceptional.
Downsides of course :
Sustain = Reduced (even if only minimally)
Broken Sting = Tuning GONE
Plus, chaging strings involves a full toolkits worth of tools. (well, a screwdriver and an allen key)
I'd never have anymore than one guitar at a time with a floyd and love my Les Paul, archtop and Blazer all being hardtails for the tone they afford me.
But to write them off completely? Sorry mate, All things in moderation.

shutdown2 Feb 2010All good Pig, everyone has their own opinions.. It's not like I didn't spend many years worshipping Vai and playing his wammy shit like the good little cloner I was, but you literally couldn't pay me to play one these days..
Still maintain there is absolutely nothing good to say about them apart from the fact the tuning stays solid (fixed bridge locking systems could do that too tho and would actually sound good)
whats the versatility they offer?
fake wammy vibrato = encourages lazy finger technique
dive bombs = peeeeew...
alternate tunings = forget about it
tone / sound = may as well be a perspex body guitar as it's hardly even using the wood to resonate.
i literally threw my ibanez floyd setup out once I wised up and it had gathered dust. some kid saw me about to hurl it off the trailer at the dump and asked if he could have it, i gave it to him reluctantly but explained 'use it to get better then convince your parents to buy you a real guitar cos if you play this thing for too long your style will suck'
Its kinda like the rollerblade of the guitar world in my view :-)
Im a fan of hair metal too pig, but nowdays I play my megadeth solos on fixed bridge seven string ibanez or even my high action / massive guage les paul if I want a challenge.
Hey on a side note Pig, dont spose you got any clips or recordings on youtube I could have a listen to of your playing? Despite your warped views on floyds it sounds like you have the right idea on everything else. Would be keen to hear your steeze.. Anyone else here too for that matter..
P
PIG..2 Feb 2010Haha, the beauty of guitar playing is that one mans trash is another mans treasure.
Nah, no clips of playing. Don't reckon I'm good enough to be posting that kind of stuff. (plus, don't have anything that I can record the guitar on well enough)
Should definetely catch up again though and over a few (see : 15 odd) beers, play some geetar.
I'll bring the rhoads with the floyd ;)
P
PIG..2 Feb 2010PS, you working in the city these days?
S
shutdown2 Feb 2010haha.. Dont really work in the city (assuming your talking Sydney CBD). I work from home on computer for some clients and am also building another iphone game in my spare time, but yeh home is about 20 mins walk to city.. Most my city clients are still in hibernation from the GFC, hopefully that will change as the years go on although im kinda digging not having to don the business shirt and pants on the daily..
as for catching up, always keen for beers, not so sure about the 'jam' side of things tho, for some reason when two guitarists get together it ends up in a 'do you know this song? nah, what about? nah, ahh fuck it lets just jam on the blues' fail.. haha
