regardless of what you hear, valve amps kinda are double the wattage you expect. So a 30 watter is a loud practice amp that if you run through a quad box might keep up with the rest of the world, a 50 watt is a very fucking loud valve amp that should never be lacking in balls... again i would go the 50 watt option and play some loud shit, but 30 watts are not soft cock by any means.. But having said that, I used to have a peavey classic 20 watter which was the best praccy amp ever but even running though a quad box would never keep up with a loud skinned rock drum kit...

for mind, a 50 watt valve amp is the ideal setup, you can pretty much play any gig with it without struggle and still drive it hard enough to push the power amp valves to their fullest..... my 2c worth

Cheers for the input deathy and shutdown

I have moved on from my death metal days but still appreiate the good ol thrash. So that's why I'm lookin for an amp that can give me some awesome tone.

Deathmoth back in the day I remember you tellin me about people who play killer solos compared to slower solos with nice bends an longer held notes. I now realize it's not all about how fast you can do shit on a guitar. For me now killer solos just don't cut it anymore. It's all about the groove

you play thrash?? jcm800 50watt if you can find one
Sshutdown2 Mar 2010
^ what he said..

800's are the shiznipple... I've owned 3 different ones (2 x 100w, 1 x 50w) and would never turn back..

Mind you, they arent for everyone, remember back in the day when silverchair were just starting to blow up (innocent criminals), daniel used to lurk the music rooms at school with my mates and I.. He asked what amp he should get when they started playing bigger gigs and we all told him jcm800, so he went and got one the next day.. It took him a whole 7 days to decide it sucked balls and went and bought a 900. He said it sounded too 'cock-rock' and didnt have enough distortion..

The thing with 800's is, they often dont have enough grunt to carry you the whole way (lead / metal etc), you may need to add a basic pedal to add a tiny amount of grunt but the sound you get afterwards is so warm and smooth it is hard to touch. The classic combo of 800 and pedal is Boss Super Overdrive to add the extra tinge of wailing sustain and distortion, a setup made famous by Zakk Wylde when he played with ozzy. Nowdays i think he has his own pedal which is basically a Super Overdrive in a different shell which he still uses with 800's. I've also heard that the Tube Screamer pedal does the same sort of thing (adds grunt without fucking up the 800's native sound) but most other pedals will ruin it.

My jcm800 is just the jizz-lord of amps, im scared to even take it out of the bedroom. It is one of the very rare dual channel setups that came out just before the whole 900 fiasco. It has a clean and dirty channel and the dirty has that 800 sound with the extra grunt already in the pre-amp / no need for the extra pedal, add to that 50watt power amp with combo and you have one of the best amps you will ever find.

shutdown if you're that age, do you remember a dude from highschool called Dave Stuart? played guitar and cricket, lived at Merriwether
Sshutdown2 Mar 2010
yeh deathmoth, that name rings some major bells but i cant put a face on him for some reason. Did he chill with the skaters at newy high?

Not trying to stereotype but if he played cricket im guessing he was not all that good of a guitarist (haha).. Sounds like the kind of guy who sat in his bedroom learning midnight oil and hoodoo guru covers on his fender strat copy and peavey rage. (fuck im a bitch)

DDeathMoth2 Mar 2010
haha don't know about the Oils...not sure what kind of axe he had back in the day. he had a cricket team called the Gravity Riders which Daniel Johns and Ben Gilles played for in about 1997..so he was that age.

probably didn't hang out with the skaters, but i know he was into the rad music of the time like nofx, propaghandi, alice in chains, stp etc... he was a decent guitarist in his later years because he got into the guitar course at Lismore uni by turning up to his audition in a pair of thongs with a beat up old nylon string and tearing it up...and that lecturer strictly teaches an electric course
Sshutdown2 Mar 2010
hahaa.. right.. Yeh i was a couple of years above the chair lads so that might explain it. Man that school / principal was the shit, such a good vibe. He was a freak himself, alcoholic who rocked up to assembly in a tiger suit one day and jumped into newcastle harbour wearing drag. I remember the principal putting on gigs at lunchtime and sometimes even during school hours where we'd all go outside and watch the latest band doing the rounds at school play a gig in the playground. Best cunt ever..

Ahh the memories.. So many funny stories from that school.. The skaters just smoked bongs 24-7, the musos were obsessed with music and were crazy jealous when silverchair blew up right in front of their faces, and the drama kids were borderline insane..

Funniest shit was year 12 drama performances for the HSC in our year. I seriously doubt that years acts will ever be beaten..

Some of the highlight acts were: (and no im not shitting you, this all really went down)

1) Dean (skater) gets up on stage, sitting on a chair with a light on him, and pulls a cone right there and has a chat about why he likes smoking weed so much..

2) Alex (artfag) sits on a chair, facing away from the examiners, and proceeds to jerk off. No shit, jerks off there and then.. Not sure if he blew.

3) Mick (boozehound) wrote a song for his drama performance, gets up and sings it while playing accoustic guitar. Try to picture a 3 chord campfire backing track.

lyrics to that song were "FUCK YOU, SHUV-IT-UP-YOUR_ARSE... DONT TELL ME WHAT TO DO, COS IM GETTIN SICK OF SHIT, IF I WANTED YOUR OPINION THEN I PROBLY WOULD HAVE ASKED SO.. FUUUUUUUCK YOOOOOOOU - CUNT!!! SHUV-IT-UP-YOUR-ARSE..."
DDeathMoth2 Mar 2010

^^oh no that's going to upset shutdown... hehe just kidding

pig dunno what the fuss is about that pedal? He had it setup with too much distortion for my preference. You'll probs get it sounding good after you do some fiddling, I want a review from you when you get it!

above supporters of the jcm 800 are so on the money. I reckon there's just enough distortion on those things as is if you've got pretty hot pickups, but a pedal to boost for solos just makes it even better. Gotta have the gain right where if you dig in you get some good grind going, without fuzzing out on everything you play, 800's were perfect for that because they didn't give you greedy bastards useless amounts of gain to throw around!!

shutdown your school sounds hilarious!
DDeathMoth3 Mar 2010
exactly. the 800 has been good enough for so many rippers over the years, if people think they're above it, they might as well munch a cock.

like a few have said, if you require some extra gain for a solo or whatever add a pedal. I use the Maxon OD808 which is pretty much an early tubescreamer replica made by the company which made the early tubescreamers for ibanez. rad little pedal
Sshutdown3 Mar 2010
"^^oh no that's going to upset shutdown... hehe just kidding"

nah, apart from the fact hes got some seriously clean shredding steeze there, hes not actually USING the wammy and the guitar is a 7-string so the presence of said whammy is excusable. hah
Sshutdown3 Mar 2010
oh zing, he doesnt even have a fucking wammy on that guitar.. super props..

ONLY fault i could possibly lay on the guy would be front pickup selected to hide sketchy picking sound but hes so damn clean on that picking anyhow it's almost not worth mentioning.

REAL nice solo Elder. Is that the shredder from your band or just some random of the tube?
PPIG..3 Mar 2010
Oath, wicked Solo.

Fetus, I don't neccesarily agree that it was too much distortion. Perhaps a little bit too fuzzy, but not for bedroom shredding.

I think when its all up louder and incorporating into a mix, yes, you need to lower the gain down and it will still sound heavy.

Its HIGHLY tweakable though.

It's more designed for the bedroom shredder who wants to turn his single channel clean amp into a shred machine.

But it can certainly be incorporated into a big rig also.

They really do sound phenomenal.

I'll definetely post up a clip once I get it of how it sounds and how much different distortions you can pump out of it.

Here's perhaps a better clip of the pedal.

Can't wait to hear how my Rhoads sounds through it!!

In an unrelated note, next weekend, we are installing new frets on my blazer and also a new nut. First time doing it, so quite nervous, but have all the right tools for it and also been researching it like CRAZY!

Next step, decide on what pickups to put into it.

Anyone had any experience with Single Coil pickups in a mahogany body?

The body had TONNES of acoustic resonance and sustains like a mofo.

Looking for a pickup that won't be too muddy, but also won't lose the beautiful smooth characters of the wood!

Bought more goodies. Fender Twin Reverb 65RI but ....decided to sell, epic amp and best cleans out there and the reverb goes all the way to Dick Dale. Have since bought a Gretsch 6119 62RI , similar to what Harrison used to play...single coils etc. And a US made Deville 2x12, slightly lighter then the Twin. Probably buy another Twin just for recording once I can get something together, they weigh so much though.

DDeathMoth4 Mar 2010
fetus i might be able to pop down. i'm proper skint but that shit is not far from my house. i'll see if fox is keen too he lives across the road
