i was expecting trolls. well its not useless its great for holding tune for ages and fine tuning, but you cant do dive bombs, dime squeals and what not without using the trem bar

In the midst of not having much to do today I thought id film a few things Ive been doing and see if any of you dudes who actually know how to play one of these things can give me any pointers etc.
just a small run in a min I thought the tempo wasnt great after hearing it. but am I headed in the right direction learning these scales and shit? I just dont want to tread water and waste time. Ultimately Id just like to be able to play some sabbath and led zeppelin etc. k thanks.

if you just wanna play some Sabbath, just learn some Sabbath. NIB is easy as shit. In fact, i can't think of too many Sabbath riffs that will take you too long to pick up
sabbath riffs are the funnest

hey guys i'm looking to get a cheap mic for recording lyrics/guitar anyone know any all round decent yet cheap mics to help get me started???
if you want decent sounds you're probably gonna want 2 mic's. like a dynamic and a condenser. you can get good quality cheap brands if you do some quick google. alternatively just get 1 dynamic (get an sm57) and use it for everything.
57 or die

that was my first piece of serious advice ive ever posted in my 5, 6 or maybe even 7 years of coming on this site.
whats happening to me?

doin fine
n00b question again. Would changing to thicker strings raise the action of a guitar a noticeable amount? My guitar had light strings on it when I got it and I re strung it today with some regulars and the action seems a lot higher then it was? im also positive I strung it correctly.
i got this.
if you have any kind of tremolo bridge, check to see if the new strings (which carry more tension) haven't caused the bridge to raise up slightly. this will raise your action. alternatively they may have caused the neck to bow upwards very slightly which would cause a very slight raising of the action.
the bottom side of the string, physically has to be the height of the nut grooves and bridge saddles which means the string is technically as close to the fingerboard as before.
because the strings are heavier (thicker) the tops of the strings (where your fingers touch) will be further away from the fingerboard, though only very very slightly. so assuming the bridge hasn't lifted and that your neck hasn't bowed, i'd say that you feel like the action is higher purely because the strings are thicker yet they action remains the same.
stick with the heavier strings and if you really think that your action is too high, get someone to look at it.

Thanks I ended up taking them off and went and got another set of .009's and put them on and it feels back to where it was. My frail fingers couldn't bend the thicker strings. They where also hurting my fingers more because all the skin is peeling off them at the moment from not being used to playing I guess.
don't play 9's. 9's are for children.
10's minimum. if they hurt your fingers, just deal with it. after a couple of days you'll notice your fingers strengthening. after a few weeks you won't even notice that you're playing 10s. and eventually you'll realise that your tone sounds fatter (and tone is everything) and you'll rue the day you ever had 9s on your guitar

haha ok... tone is a good point didn't even think of that. Here's some other piece of shit too. Forgot to go back to clean channel so has epic distortion ha. I messed with a few sabbath songs like you said n.i.b, into the void etc but I just got board of playing them pretty quickly to be honest so I j have just been mucking around with this stuff again.
after thinking about that obviously you would not play the same pattern on a different position.
So is that chart only showing me the root position for each key? Do i need a bigger chart to see all the diff positions for each key?

what you've got there is five versions of the same minor pentatonic scale. Pattern 2 is your straight up version that most peeps learn first.
to make sense of these charts note the red dot signifies the root note. so if you play Pattern 2 in the 10th position (D @ 10th fret/6th string) then you'd play Pattern 5 in the 5th position (D @ 5th fret/5th string) etc. etc. so all those scales are the same notes as long as you make the red (root) note the same note.
you gotta know where your notes are to able to use this effectively, but you gotta learn that shit anyway if you want to be a ruler.
one other way to approach these, other than to shred all up the neck, is that you can play different scales without having to switch positions. eg. you're soloing over a 12 bar blues in D minor. you're shredding away in ye olde 10th fret D minor pentatonic (pattern 2) and then the chord goes to the iv (Gminor). because you know all these patterns, you can start shredding the G minor pentatonic with the 10th fret A string root of G ie pattern 5. that way you didn't have to move positions to change scale. always handy to know that shit
this chart is actually, without saying so, the CAGED system. look it up. if you're going to these lengths to learn your minor pentatonic in the CAGED you might want to know the logic behind it...it will really unlock the fingerboard once you dig into it.

Thanks! I know the notes but not really well enough to put this into use yet. But I can see how it will make sense. So basically you could say play any pattern in d minor and then shift to say a min position and play the pattern that has the same root notes as the first pattern you played at the 10th fret thus keeping the key the same?
Eg i could go from e blues scale at first fret to pattern 2 at 12th fret?
nah I don't really understand I should prob go get a lesson or two to refresh.
yes you can play the same key in different positions. one of the things that makes the guitar different from instruments like keyboards, saxamaphones and shit is that you can play most notes in various places and hence all scales or chords or anything can be played in different places.
"eg i could go from e blues scale at first fret to pattern 2 at 12th fret?" - yes, but you'd say that the first fret E blues is open position, not first fret.

So in that chart all the root notes are A notes right? So if I was to play over a 12 bar blues in a min i could just basically improvise in any position using the pattern on chart.
Where as if I was playing over a d min 12 bar I would play pattern 2 at the 10th and then pattern 5 at the 5th and so on which makes all the roots d's. That correct?
Once I got a chart thing up of all the notes it made a lot more sense as I dont know them by heart yet.
Cheers for all your help btw I really dont want to have any lessons again.
I also ordered a marshall class 5 today il chuck some pics up when I get it.

that big chart that has the five patterns laid out over one fingerboard is in A, yes. but just focus on each individual pattern and practice them in all keys. you want your fingers to memorise the pattern, not have your eyes recognising which frets to hit so much; if your fingers know what they're doing you can play in other keys without having to think so much
and yes your second question, that's correct.

Yep thanks will do... Lightbulb moment ha.

sunny coast aswell...
i've got a line 6 M13 for sale.
look them up if you don't know what they are. basically one hell of a stompbox modeller with NO AMP MODELLING. includes all the classic effects, delays and verbs, a looper, tuner etc. can run on several different switching modes and can be MIDI synced (ie if you're playing to a click/backing you can have your effects switched automatically via external midi rather than with your feet)
Less than a year old. Unit is in mint condition. Gigged a few times but always lugged in padded roadcase.
Paid $700, selling for $500
