About this black box 4 covers a year, even if it was true i wouldnt really care because through blackbox there is that many riders gnarly photos are guaranteed to come out. Look at Burman having three covers in a little over a year and they were all pretty gnarly. I think the problem is when a cover like Thomas's last month comes out, which I think was a bit of a cop-out, I mean surely something better/ more interesting could have been run. Same with Leo's cover, when bryce golder had a feeble run same angle in the journal mid article, i question its place on a cover, compared to Gabbers gap to fifty. Bottom line is I think slam really need to lift their game to compete with the journal, as it has my money hands down

6051, you have no clue about Australian skateboarding nor do you have a clue how to spell.
Rreesm8bigproblems4 May 2011
yer true, i get kinda sad when i see interviews with american pros and that. kind of a waste when it should be up and coming aussies
OOllyWest4 May 2011
gabbers is better than leo anyway
OOllyWest4 May 2011
and that randy ploesser sequence makes up for any poor cover choices i reckon

Popeyeeee, i can spell and this is not a spelling forum you jerk! i guarantee i know more about Australian skateboarding than you do.

I'm surprised that SLAM haven't had this thread deleted yet.

Normally, whenever there is criticism of SLAM, they adopt the tactic used by communist Russia and simply remove all evidence of the event ever having taken place.

popeyeee, how do you spell asshole? or is it arsehole?

Firstly, on the Blackbox thing. They are always going to favour the riders of the companies that advertise in there magazine as its more or less expected.
I have heard of plenty of companies hooking up photos that arnt ads but because they advertise. That is kind of wack i suppose because you should pay for your ad and the rest should be left for everyone but then again there always going to want to keep them happy.

2) Journal comes out four times a year and it would be fucking hard to bring out a mag monthly.

3) The worst thing about the American covers and intervews is that its reject shit. Its embarrasing that our bar is that low that we get Leo's cover that wont make a photo in the states.

i just dont get that jamie t got the cover of the mag last issue... when nugget won skater of the year?? like every other time the person who wins skater of the year has had cover. except andrew b..... as if nugget didnt have a better photo to use as a cover.. his one of the best skateboarders in oz. let alone the world?? it all just comes down to money... black box would prob be liek will give u this amount of money and pay for this amount of advertiseing in the mag so my riders get covers.... its sad but thats how the business works... dont get me wrong i love aus skate mags... it just hasnt been turning into a poor mans transworld...
IInsomniajosh4 May 2011
Man hating on something that has supported Aussie photog's and skaters for yonks? Jeez.

HOMIE CAM
"how to make a skate vid"

They put that on the cover....really?
FFRYd4 May 2011
I like how this photo is almost identical to Bryces feeble in the journal and it makes a cover. But never the less an unknown person will never get a cover no matter how ganrly the trick is and how well the photo is. Everyone knows you have to be a wig to get published. Just look at how there is usually only one focus instead of two and the same 20 skaters have pictures every month.
FFRYd4 May 2011
oh and lets not go into DNL'S with aussie skate mags
TTupac4 May 2011
It's sucks, I hate it.

Don't go hating on the editorial staff so much. Slam are part of a much larger magazine company with serious financial targets and what not. They know this kind of thing is a negative to a certain smaller yet vocal 'core' demographic. That said, magazines sales must be better when there is a U.S. guy on the cover or they wouldn't do it. Probably does not hurt that U.S. photos would be cheaper when the dollar is at 1.09. When you are owned by a large company who require a return this is just the kind of stuff that you have to do. The journal being owned by a skate wierdo or 2 can forego the popular cover sticker sheets and such because they can make a decision for quality over sell through.

You could not be further from the truth. You have not a clue what you are talking about.

I see it as pretty simple. Slam is aimed at a younger market. 12-17 year olds. Who is on the cover, who should be on the cover. The link between black box etc is irrelevant to that target audience. They see Jamie on the cover and get hyped.

Is it a shame that aussies are not on the cover more? Fuck yes.

But it is what it is. If you like it read it, if not dont.

BACKMAN NEW GEN WAD UP!!!!!!

"Slam is aimed at a younger market. 12-17 year olds"

You're agreeing with me. Maybe re-read what I wrote. I said it was the smaller (core/older) demographic that gets pissed off by this. Thier larger main audience (12-17 year olds) lap it up.
Mmike.drury5 May 2011
Apart from all this blackbox speculation.

Do any of you have any idea how gnarly that spot actually is.

Dane had a shot of a crooks on the same rail a few years ago in a Journal, i'd think that this would have been only the 2nd trick to go down on it?

I think it's definitely cover worthy seppo or not.
